Going to New York on holiday soon for swmbo big birthday and was after suggestions from those of you who have been as to what should & should not be included in our plans? Good eating? Places to visit? Do's & Don'ts etc etc etc... Any help would be appreciated

We will be away for 10 days in May...

Its been years since i have been to NY , me and my mate did the empire building usual sight seeing stuff , also can't remember the name of it but there was a massive speedboat tour around the statue of liberty ....

While the wifes did the sex in the city tour bus thing ...

On another night me and my mate went Downtown and got absolutely hammered in some boozers ... how the we got back to the hotel i'll never know ...

Back then it was just after 9/11 so we went there ...

Times square is a hectic place at night ...

Oh and i thought the sounds of sirens and horns were something they added into movies , how wrong was i they were constant through the night

We also did the horse and cart stuff through central park ...

Wifes did the usual Tiffanys and 5th Avenue shopping ...

Other than that just the normal tourist stuff ...

"Open Mike Night " sounded like a lot of fun until i found out i was going to an Autopsy

Make a list of definite places like ground zero, statue of lib, Empire State, grand central station, Central Park, rockafella centre, NY library, Bloomingdales,Macys, helicopter trip book by statue liberty ferry departure place, Hard Rock Cafe is great for food cocktails etc, red lobster is the dogs for food, bubba gump shrimp co eat, we used the subway to travel down to 911 as there all close together and can be done in a day or two it's safe as houses tbh common sense will tell you if it looks dodgy but tbh most are tourists, Tiffany gucci Louis Vuitton are nice stores I think all on fifth avenue but travel is easy, Times Square is brilliant you enjoy you lucky boy just a few pics from a few months ago

Go to China Town and buy a Rolex for $25...good fun. I had my 40th in the revolving restaurant on top of the Marriott Hotel in Times Square, great place to eat at night. Current MY2020

Went a couple of years ago - without question the best restaurant we ate at was called Arturos (106 West Houston Street)
one of those hard to find places and we definitely had a 'shall we go in' moment outside.

Been going to NYC since the mid 80's so here are a few suggestions:



Go up the GE Tower (Top of the Rock) for the view, this way you will get to see the Empire State Building and the view is better.

Go up the Empire State Building for the experience

Revolving Bar on top floor of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square (free entry but there is a cover charge) great views

Staten Island Ferry and/or Water Taxi for free / cheap waterside view of the city

World Trade Centre Memorial

Wall Street Area

South Street Seaport

Grand Central Station Concourse and food hall below

Ellis Island (not sure if reopened yet) and if time Statue of Liberty but be prepared for long lines.

USS Intrepid (Concorde, Space Shuttle, Nuclear Sub, USS Intrepid itself and lots of air craft)

Bloomingdales for shopping experience (bit like Harrods - this is where the famous "Big Brown Bags" come from)

China town (fake goods but watch the quality - the best stuff is not normally on display but prices not always that cheap for good stuff)

Greenwich Village & Soho areas nice to walk around, bars etc..

Lunch/Dinner Cruise (food not normally much good but good views)

If you want a panorama of the city go across the river to Brooklyn Heights

Central Park/Strawberry Fields maybe a horse drawn carriage ride around the park to see the expensive hotels etc...

Lots of museums and galleries if they are your thing.

A few traditional speak easies are still around if you can find one.

Loads of restaurants around Times Square and on Restaurant Row independents and major chains. Price range from very reasonable to very expensive so check first and drinks can be expensive as well.

I always avoid the hotel restaurants as expensive although some have good bars but a diner is much better value for your breakfast.

I would take taxi from the airport in rather than the train ($60 - $100 depending on the airport) although you can often get a limo for the same price. Subway is fine to use during the day and compared with London yellow cabs are reasonable and most have an idea where they are going these days. Difficult to get a cab in the rain and at shift change over time (around 1600 every day).

NY is a great city for a few days and loads of shopping and bars in addition to what I have listed. Shopping is reasonable compared to the UK but more expensive than many places in the US.

Remember to tip 15% to 20% and a couple of $ per bag to porters/door men etc...

It can take from 15 mins (last week) to 4 hours to clear US immigration depending on other flight arriving around the same time as you.

I do drive in NY on occasions but not worth having a car unless you want to go out of the city.

Some very good tips, so I'll only add what's not been mentioned.

When going to Macy's and Bloomingdales, take your passport for a 10% discount card (for non US nationals.)
Walk the Highline, old dissused rail line now a park.
If you find yourself in little Italy, google Lombardi's Pizza restaurant, the best I've ever had.
Tonys just off Times Square, one of the better restaurants in the area.
Spotted Pig, famous for its food, hard to book, tip - go upstairs for a drink at the bar and jump on a table when someone gets up, to avoid the (always) 2hr wait downstairs
Village is cool at night.
Madison Sq Gardens is an experience for a hockey match if you're there at that time.
Take the open top bus tour. Put a bag on your head if you're embarrassed, but it's the quickest way to get your bearings.

+1 for madison square gardens. Watched college basketball semi finals - hot dogs were amazing!
one thing to avoid is bronx zoo, waste if time and effort and we weren't exactly welcomed to the area by the locals. That said we were four 22 year old Scottish lads looking a bit worse for wear after a week of exuberance!

Central station is amazing, holocaust memorial also amazing but for different reasons...
