My neighbour just popped around to let me know that 3 blokes in a recovery truck were parked outside my house, having a good look at my rangie. As he aproached them, they sped off.

How secure is a 2007 tdv8? If I hide the keys, can they still steal it without a key? They may have been looking at the 22" alloys...if they try to lift the car, will it set the alarm off?

The FFRR is fitted with a tilt alarm a.o. so it should go off when lifted. You can try if yours is active with a jack while the car is locked and alarmed.

Hiding the keys is definitely a good one as without the key it gets very hard to steal these cars.

Have you called the police and asked them whether they are aware of any similar sightings and maybe could run a patrol car past your house a bit more. In some places they actually take this sort of thing seriously.

Unfortunately he didn't get the plate as they left too quickly. It would be difficult to tow the car out of the drive because of the way the car is parked. My wife's car is parked blocking my rangie in too.

I haven't called the police as I don't think they could do anything much. It was dark, so my neighbour didn't see much of the truck either.

Don't leave the keys on show but don't hide them either. If they decide to break in for the keys you don't want them to come upstairs while you and your family are a sleep. I agree with CMJ keys should be out of sight of windows etc but not hidden upstairs. Family first a car is just that.

Just to re - iterate others above.
Don't become over protective of your car - it's not worth it. Your home, however, is.
The RR is very difficult to take without the keys.
If your car is blocked in by another car, then all the better as criminals are generally lazy opportunists.
Finally, you must report it to the police. Have your neighbour record any detail about the incident.
Policing generally is about intelligence gathering nowadays so they are reliant on this kind of incident to gain a full picture of criminal behaviour.
Your incident may be the missing piece - do it as soon as possible. They may be sat in a cell at present waiting for a charge decision for a like offence . . .

Paul r, Do you have security lights at the front of the house? Our Rangie is on the drive but it is open to the lane at the front, we have an IR floodlight at the front of the house as there are no street lights, even a fox walking past will trigger the light.

If someone is mooching around the car a floodlight coming on should scare them off, you could even put a mock-up CCTV camera under the light.

This is such a sad posting, where are we going? In my homeland two marocan guys tried to rob a jeweler at gunpoint and the jewelers wife killed them with a gun they had under the counter.
The whole nation thinks she is a hero, apart from the Marrocans they have demonstrated against illegal possession of weapons..... and ofcourse the socialist politicians who called the criminals "victims" and cried out for prosecution of this jewelers wife.

If they were more looking at the wheels there is a good chance they will come back as they will have been assessing the locking bolts on them to see how easy they could get round them.

The tilt alarm is great for this as it will be set off when they try and jack the car unless they are very gentle and just jack on the underside of the hub behind the wheel. This is why a good few cars with locking nuts now have false covers over them to hide what they are like underneath.

It has been known in the past that lift recovery trucks have been stolen from depots and used to steal high value cars over a few nights by just lifting them up and over obstructions and then stuck in a container before anyone even notices. This is where trackers come in but its only really for the people with enough moola to have a car like the FF or such thats a few years old they are perfect targets for keygrabs and exports.
