Viscous fan?

Hi guys, my RR is increasingly sounding like an old plane taking off!! The viscous van is obviously locked on and even after engine is cool i cant spin or move it at all!. I felt a slight loss of power but am not sure if it was me backing off due to the embarrassment of the noise! Firstly im going to get the fan replaced but do any of you who have had this problem recommend doing the water pump at the same time? I had the thermostat done last week!

Also ive noticed a squeak/grind coming from OSR wheel. It sounds like its on a certain part of the disk as it is quiet for 3/4 of the revolution then squeak/grind then quiet again until it reaches the same point. I thought/hoped it was a stone but cant see any thing!, again Id appreciate your thoughts before I take her to the garage...again!

My TD6 VF would kick in when it got hot and then stay on even when cold the next day.

The way to release it was to red line it and it would disengage again. The howl was unbelievable, people would stop in their tracks and turn around to see what coming. The red line procedure is (I am reliably told) not really recommended long term solution...... Whistle

I'm sure someone who knows what they are talking about will input to your water pump question shortly. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Ha ha thanks, i really didnt appreciate the extra head turners today!!! I forgot to add that I have no messages on dash at all.

When you change your coupling use genuine parts, I wasted money buying a lesser part, and had to do the job twice and incurring twice the cost!
Best to change it soonest as it'll stress the fan and waterpump Smile

I removed mine a long time ago and found the ff in the UK coped ok without it other than very heavy towing.

If you use the AC the ac fan copes suitably as it can adjust it's speed when required to ensure the engine stays cool but iirc will only kick in if the ac is off when the engine gets very hot.

Mine was fine like this for a long time as the viscous unit isn't cheap and I don't rag mine about which is what generates the most heat. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Same here as kingpleb, been removed for 9 months or so and no problems. However, I believe this is not good advice for petrol engines (the TD6 engine runs colder than a penguins dodaahs), so you are perhaps better off changing the coupling. A fiddly job, but ensure you have the right tools (a couple of viscous fan spanners from Halfords etc will help immensely.) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
