Also looking to buy a FFRR..

Hi, I am new to this site, a visitor from PistonHeads where I read that this is THE forum for all things RR. I am also looking for a FFRR (my first) as my V registered TD5 is now 14 years old. I'm fed up with getting a soaking from the leaking sunroofs every time I get into it (and with the recent weather…). In any event, even though it is mechanically sound, it is getting pretty long in the tooth.

My research seems to have boiled down to either a c. 2009 3.6TDV8 for somewhere in the region of £30k, or a 2011 TDV8 with c. 20k miles for between £43k - £44k. Any thoughts on whether the difference between the two is worth the extra money would be greatly received. Also, does anyone have any thoughts on how much lower than the advertised price for a TDV8 of, say, £43,500 a dealer might be prepared to go? One last thing - are prices for RRs cyclical, e.g. more expensive in winter when there is a higher demand for 4x4s, and would it serve me to stick with my Disco until the summer, or are prices not subject to such fluctuations? Many thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice on this.

Welcome!

Prices are certainly subject to fluctuation, although as winter has been mild so far, probably less of a premium over summer prices this year.

Main dealers (esp Stratstone) don't tend to offer much of a discount, though you might be able to negotiate some extras (servicing, warranty, etc). Probably more scope for negotiation with independents, but check what warranty they offer

That said, always buy on condition, not mileage. Mine has 92k mile on the clock, the last 25k added by me - it's immaculate and I purchased from an independent without a warranty because I had confidence in the car (but then I believe I knew what to look for when buying - read the guides on here)

The facelift 4.4 TDV8 is supposed to be another step up over the 3.6 but I can't see anyone being disappointed with a 3.6 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Hi and welcome

I have had both of the cars you are looking for and IMO i would go for the 4.4V8 the power is immense compared to the 3.6.
With a 2009 it will already be out of warranty so you will only get a year out of the dealer. If you go for the 11 or 61 plate you will have some warranty and be able to get another year out of them.

As for premium in winter i would say not on the 2011 model these cars are not in abundance and Imo are at a small premium already.

It all depends on your budget now. I would test drive both engines and make your own mind up from there.

Good luck with your search and don't forget to post some pics

I have to echo that the 4.4 TDV8 is the way to go if your budget will stretch to it. I am told that prices are falling faster now, and as an example, Jim Hallam Land Rover have a 61 plate (Oct 11) 4.4 Vogue SE thats covered 11k with offers around £44500. There is stock of L405 free and also used prices are falling, maybe a warm winter. I would wait.

Many thanks for your thoughts so far. Took a look at Jim Hallam's website - that one didn't last long! Advertised at £46,995 and already sold.

Looking at a March 2011 registered 4.4 TDV8 with 18.7k miles from a main dealer. I am told the service history shows only one service done "privately" (by which I assume neither by a main dealer nor a LR specialist) at 17,965 miles in November 2013 "as per the predictive servicing indicated by the car". They will give it a full service before I buy it if I proceed.

Should I be concerned? I thought it should be at least every 12 months.

If LR give it a service and a warranty of at least a year then it should be ok. Mine does circa 16k miles between services.

Is it a Westminster model by any chance? If so, do you know it's based on the Vogue not Vogue SE, and there are lots about. So be aware the resale values in comparison to the Vogue SE and AB are likely to be lower. MY23 D350 HSE

Anything you buy from LR Approved means you will get an extra year on top of the 3 year manufacturer warranty. As you've said - they'll also do a service on it.

I've recently bought a 2012 model - and the dealership spent in excess of £1700 servicing it and replacing parts such as pads, discs etc etc.

March 2011 is too early for the run out Westminster I think.

I would steer clear, there are plenty out there. It would have to be very cheap to make it worthwhile

Thanks for the input, guys. Joined the club today, swapping my trusty 1999 Disco TD5 (only 34k miles) for a July 2011 registered Vogue in Buckingham Blue with Ivory leather (OK, parted with some cash as well). Picking up on Saturday, and will post some pics soon. I now have somewhere to put the fullfatrr.com sticker I bought here last week! Very Happy 2011 Buckingham Blue TDV8
