Drivers window won't go up!

Hey guys,

Having problems with my drivers window, not driven the car for a few days, had a flat battery so charged overnight, when I got in put the drivers window down and now won't go up, all other windows work from main switch, can hear relay clicking on drivers door when switch pressed down, but no relay clicking when held in up position, also tried auto closure from key and again other windows close but not drivers door. Find it hard to believe it is mechanism or motor as working perfectly smoothly previously, and ideas of what I can check, car is a '04 autobiography. 2004 4.4 Autobiography - gone

seems a coincidence this happened after the battery charge...

you could try disconnecting the battery [procedure in the wiki]

also look to see if there's any obstruction in the window runners..

Something else to add to list of what not to use on in case it breaks Whistle
That little button for the heated steering wheel looks so tempting on a cold morning but dare i touch it?? Mine was a blue one! Smile

Battery disconnect didn't help, Im thinking it must be something to do with the relay which seems to be in drivers door, I will take off door card in the morning.

1 question, is there a separate relay for up motion, and down, or one to control both ways? I have a BMW carsoft interface which I plugged in allowing control of the body module via the OBD, and again all windows worked, including down on drivers side, but no reaction when attempting to close, making me think its not the switch. I have also examined area around body control module under passengers seat (I believe from reading other posts this where the windows are controlled, I cannot see any signs of water ingress here either) so a little stumped! 2004 4.4 Autobiography - gone

117, i had the same issue and was relay module, due to dubious design flaw and control position. As you will have noticed if window is slightly open, rain or windscreen washer hits the main buttons Thumbs Up

Well. pretty useless day really, I checked the wiring connector between body and door for damage in the loom, no signs of fraying or corrosion in the connector, then got the door card off, motor is pretty much impossible to access as he glass is fully down, and only has two wires going to it, I did attempt to swap the wires controlling the up down motion in the switch and no noise/movement, taken apart the switch housing and no signs of corrosion or damage! do you guys know if is there a way I could definitively test the motor? 2004 4.4 Autobiography - gone

i put a 12v battery to the motor and got my window to go up and down that way to test the window motor etc

My window had the same issues however, i used a hawkeye which was showing a relay fault, i found it to be the actual switch pack on the drivers door.

the strange this was every other button worked and lit up and all that had failed was the drivers window

Hi Cliffy,

Thank you for your response, our faults sound exactly the same, I seem to have two wires coming from the motor, do you remember how you connected (i.e is one positive and one negative, and reversed to changed direction)

Appreciated,

Hi 117, didnt see you earlier question, it was. if I remember correctly , a window relay module, was about £250 from stealer, the drivers window switch, is the first one any water hits due to its position on the panel, i am not technical so had to go with dealers advice, and as you know an open window cant wait a couple of weeks, hope that helps Thumbs Up

Hi Guys,

Happier now!

Managed to jump the ignition live and window motor cables together in the door loom and get the window to raise, so now confirmed it has to be the switch mechanism somewhere, very weird as everything on the switch pack works bar drivers window raise, however at least the car is now watertight again!

I will try to work on the switch PCB to see if I can see any failure points, worth an attempt a repair before I fork out the circa £200 on a new switch pack! 2004 4.4 Autobiography - gone

From looking at the window control module attached to the switch pack, the brown Tyco relay looks to be the only potential culprit, can't see any dry joints or signs of water ingress, I have ordered a replacement relay due to arrive on Monday, the plan being to desolder and remove the existing faulty relay and replace with a new one, so hopefully there could be a cheaper solution to this problem! I will keep you guys posted. 2004 4.4 Autobiography - gone
