Would a quick rub down and a coat of clear lacquer (after ridding of rust) hurt? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Would the liqueur nut just come off again when touched with the wheel brace so to speak? |

Possibly, but is suspect only in the little grooves....
