Should I have a remote control for my fbh ?
My fbh functions when I start in the cold weather however twice now in the last couple of days when switching off the engine I am enveloped in clouds of white smoke that smells of diesel this happens for about 30 seconds as the fbh is powering down

I don't think that is the FBH running, I had that happening on both my TDV8, Vogue and Sport, it is a system to warm the fuel when you start the engine by cold weather to prevent the Diesel from freezing.
That's the thing producing the smelly fumes you are speaking of.

the fbh is burning off excess fuel when you stop, as Ian ^ suggested due to short journeys ?.

That will be it, the unit has fired up and not come to an end of its cycle by itself. Its been shut down by you, (short journey) I have this and appears normal. We have a VW with a FBH and this is the same on short journeys.

Take it out for a run or let it idle for 30mins to run the full cycle and clear it out, this is a way that can kill them as the soot builds up in the firing chamber and clogs the fan up eventually  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
