TDV8 Engine Whine

My TDV8 seems to have developed a whine or whiring sound from the front right of the engine. Sad

It sounds a bit like transmission whine, but is present whether the car is moving or static and is loud enough to be heard in the cabin.
The noise is also engine speed related (gets louder/changes pitch as you rev the engine).
Power steering seems fine, noise does not change if you turn the wheel.
There does not seem to be any loss of power.
The noise does not change whether the air con is on or off (Air con is not very effective).
The noise does not seem to come from the viscous fan.
Seems to be too far forward for turbo
PAS fluid look to be full
Oil level is fine
Coolant levellooks fine

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing the noise?

I am thinking about taking the aux drive belt off to eliminate work out whether it is aux blt driven items or something else, is it OK to run the engine for a 30 seconds with no drive belt on? 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Does the TDV8 have a viscous fan?

I think it does. there is certainly a fan driven off the water pump, so I assume that is a viscous fan 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Not fixed yet

I took it into my local dealer and they said it was the alternator, so rather than pay £750 to have the alternator replaced I have just decided to live with it until I can find time to take the aux belt off myself 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Be careful - there are other threads on this - the 2007 alternator seems to be a bit weak.

If it goes, then you're cooked - it will flatten the battery and you're stranded.

Got AA membership for when the alternator eventually goes bang.

Not convinced that it is the alternator as I have not had any charging problems and I don't think the noise is coming from the alternator area. That's why I am tying to find time to get the aux belt off and check myself.

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the viscous fan and Aux belt on a TDV8 without draining the cooling system? 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Could it be the belt spanner roll bearing ?? I always replace the spanner roll as those bearings seem to not last very long. The spanner roll is quite cheap to replace together with the belt but some mechanics try to save money there (while maybe still charging you).

Hope this helps. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I have had to replace my alternator, and whilst the front end is in bits I took the opportunity to check all the idlers and tensioner for the aux drive belt.

The large idler is grinding away when I spin it, slight grumble from the tensioner, but guess I now confirm the source of my engine whine is the large idler on the Aux drive belt 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

goot a good offer to sell the LC and as I didn't have a garage to keep it in, I took it before it started to rust and before anything major went wrong with it. Maybe buy another one in a few years or an Esprit 56 TDV8 Vogue SE
