Seeing as you have a "burnt smell" when you've recently connected the battery after charging, I would suggest you need to get an auto electrician to check this out before you do anything else. As this smell is noticed without you driving the vehicle (I.e. mechanical equipment getting hot) this is most likely going to be an electrical fault.
If it wasn't for the burnt smell you could happily connect it up and run through some checks to see whats discharging your battery. If there burnt smell is a short circuit or damaged component somewhere you may risk causing further damage, or worse, causing a fire.
