The 3.9 and the 4.0 have exactly the same capacity (same bore and stroke), although the 4.0 and 4.6 are otherwise quite different from the earlier engines - different block and internals, cross-bolted mains etc.

3.5 to 3.9 capacity increase was all bore; 4.0 to 4.6 was all stroke.

We have two P38's that we use as daily hacking cars.

They are nice enough cars, interior is nicely put together with no rattles, seats are comfy, engines can be weak spots if not maintained. Gearboxes as said above tend to be bullet proof.

Both of ours are 1997 4.6 HSE models that were bought to use as hacking cars and that's why our TDV8 AB does 3000 miles a year. They do what we want them too. They're both chipped with the Mark Adams Tornado chips which livens them up a bit.

We've had one of them 3 years this month and the other one we'll of had 3 years come May. Neither of them have required much other then routine maintenance, one of them we've put all new bushes on the suspension as there was a little bit of play in it when we got it and that sharpened it up no end.

If you're looking at a late model it'll have the Bosch/THOR intake on it which improved the power/torque a little and was supposed to improve the economy. Stay clear of any with Multipoint injection LPG on them though as I've never seen one that runs properly. Apparently this is due to the ignition timing being locked to much in the management software stopping it advancing and retarding the ignition timing as much as it needs to to run properly on LPG. The only way to unlock it is to fit a set of Tornado chips which are around £500 - 600.

Avoid the ones that have had steel spring conversions as it completely destroys the ride. There's a chap locally who had one and when I drove it, it would smash through pot holes rather then gliding over them like ours do. The air suspension isn't difficult or expensive to overhaul if you know what you're doing.

The 4.0 V8 is underpowered, it's 186bhp whereas the 4.6 is 226bhp. There's quite a big difference in torque too (although after a TDV8 they both feel underpowered!). I heard that the 4.0's also got the blocks that didn't cut the mustard to become 4.6's as they failed when tested ultrasonically.

The two we've got I don't ever see being classics or collectibles however a late Anniversary or a Holland & Holland could well be as they weren't produced in that big a numbers.

The 2.5 Diesel I've heard won't pull the skin off a rice pudding however for about a grand JE Engineering do a bigger intercooler and remap that makes them as good as the V8 for power, better for torque and economy.

There's a lot of good information and a forum on www.rangerovers.net for the P38's.

That one you've posted looks a nice car Jay. If you weren't so far away you'd be more then welcome to come and have a look at/drive of both of ours.

I had one of the last Rover 3.5 V8 in a 1993 Discovey. Engine got replaced under warranty within the first six months. Spent the next 100K miles waiting for the replacement engine to fail. Luckily it was fine. However, it makes my current vehicle seem very economical in comparison. Rarely managed to get 200 miles out of the eighty litre tank. 2016 3.0 Vogue

I think the early P38's will become classics but I can't see the later stuff doing much for a while yet.

Looks-wise, I'm of the 'plain Jane' opinion although it must be remembered that if it wasn't for BMW's dislike of the P38, the L322 would never have existed in the form we know and love.

On another level, the P38 aged far better than the Classic ever did. I know the model life was far shorter, but it never looked over-developed in the same way that I think the Classic became. Si. <This is my name.

Same old stories, people don't maintain their cars and they fall apart around them.
Too tight to run the ac so the electrics fail. Same story with the L322 Diesels going through gearboxes - never get serviced, go way beyond manufacturer limits and then the box fails and everyone blames poor design. It's in b&w - oil anf filter change every 60k. Simples.

The p38 is fine when looked after, trouble is like old jags - the wrong sort of person buys them...

I tested a Y-Reg 2.5 DHSE.... Shocked possibly the most sluggish drive of my life...after much searchng I went for a 52 facelifted D2, that wiped the floor in every way only thing mine lacked was rear air suspension as it was a 5 seater - but I preferred the springs and was site based in those days.

Drove a mates 4.6 and it too felt lacking though much better than Diesel and uber smooth. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

The P38 is and always was an absolute pig looks wise Whistle Looks like an early 90's Metrocab IMO..... I do like the picnic tables the Autobiography P38 was available with though Thumbs Up Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White
