United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Tonga Green

[quote="mjdronfield"]I won't ask what a Range Rover Sport is doing in our header..........

......Oh hang on, its an L405.

Seriously though, they do look well.

I have to agree with you about the new Sport, if the tailgate split I would seriously consider one next.

Am enjoying the debate guys. Some interesting stuff about alternation of good cars though I must admit I always had a bit of a softspot for P38s.

For me its just a bit disappointing that there has been a gradual and sustained increase in apparent luxury without the option not to and with an ever increasing price and by the look of things fragility. Not that I dont think the new model is not stunning but whats it for? The original was for farmers who wanted to look smart enough in the town too. You could hose it out if you wanted! Then the Disco was more horsey set or family oriented with few whistles and bells. And the P38 became slightly more upmarket again. And then the L322 with a not huge boot, electrolytic corrosion like you wouldnt believe, the softest windscreen on any car of its time, laughable design faults (rear wheel arches, horn positioned under wading height etc), very fragile underbody for a car of its ability but with the interior of a limosine. And the same for the new car. This forum is very lively and a fabulous resource but I cant help thinking some other cars dont have as big an internet following as they are just more reliable and better built! Which makes me worry about the new car and even later L322s with fancy dashboards, cameras everwhere (have you seen the quality of the wiring of the PDC sensors in the l322?!) and an interior I wouldnt let anyone in with a speck of dirt on them never mind use for work or anything.
I guess my point is that Range Rover have created their own niche but I cant understand if I am honest why people would buy the new model. Contentious I know and please guys dont be offended. I am in the enviable position I guess of being able to purchase one but I would not at the moment at least as I dont see it as much better at anything than the L322 apart from slight economy improvement and lots more to go wrong!
Is it for the 4wd system? Plenty of equally capable cars nowadays after all if you trully honestly dont want to get stuck somewhere inhospitable in the world you go in a Landcruiser. Or the luxury? Gorgeous as it is is it as comfortable as an S class with far better mpg? But then there is the badge. If the new car was made by Ssangyong would any of us buy it? Even if it was 40k? Doubtful.
And the new Disco is more luxurious even than the L322 in some ways I think and infintely more practical. But why the Lexus style rear lights?! And the silly electric handbrake.

Oh I think I need to calm down and stop spewing out my thoughts on here as they dont actually seem to be going anywhere! Though I must admit I am seriously tempted by the new xDrive X5s. Interior far more to my liking and very impressive mpg for the performance. And I wont get stuck anywhere. Or maybe I will Arrrggghhhhh!!!!

At the Nantwich Show the other day there was an L405 Autobiography with POA on it, plus a new sport with a sticker price of around sixty grand. Both were utterly outclassed in terms of looks and interior feeling by the Galway Green AB S/C 2009 car nestled at the back. 23k miles, £36,000. No brainer to me.

Used is almost always a no brainer. Thanks to depreciation, a FFRR can turn from a lottery wish to a reasonable buy in only a few years. Thumbs Up

Was sat at my daughters school this morning, 3 black L405's in the car park and another 3 L322's . A few sports, old and new also

Sat looking at them all and I've got to agree, the L322 is the best looking of the lot. It's a great bit of design Cool The L405 almost looks bland

Is your daughter learning for mechanic?
Good school, you never will find so many problems on other cars and they seem to have a good stock Whistle

The interior of the new L405 is brilliant, up to date and a real limo, but the outside is not so good. In my opinion the dreaded new Sport looks better from the outside....but no split tailgate, a major error by JLR. The L322 is a classic design, a great road car and also has stunning off road capabilities and much better looks. The new one seems too 'bling' worthy of the label 'Chelsea Tractor' unfortunately.

Next car will be an upgrade from the L322 4.2 S/C to the L322 5.0 S/C...

Very interesting thread fellow members. I'm not ashamed to say that I cannot afford to spend 85 - 100k on a car, but I've just spent a large figure (for me) on a beautiful 5.0 SC L322, late 2010. I also have an elder (2004) L322, which is also beautiful. I leave one at my office whilst using the other, and when I'm there, I'm usually able to park them next to each other. They are a stunning design, and six years apart, there's a real elegance about them both.
I was looking out of the office window today, with several others in our client car park, along with a single L405. Irrespective of the L322's age, in my opinion, they are truly a wonderful car, the L405 does not come close. I respectfully apologise to L405 owners, it's just my opinion.

With all iconic designs the problem always evolves to what next? Arguably fellow users on the forum are not the target demographic for JLR and the L405 and some of the comments may be even welcomed by the design team.

The positive aspect we all should welcome are the strong global sales across the product range which means the design is hitting the right buttons. Clearly in objective measures the L405 is a superior car however the design avoids a marmite reaction and clearly has the L322 DNA.

For me the King is dead, long live the King.
