03-04 Td6

Thanks to an increasing family, I'm currently deciding which LR model to change to, between FL, D3 or L322 TD6.

The L322 plan would be a 03-04 Td6, FSH car around 95-100k (£9-11k) I'd recon the gearbox, change the battery, the compressor, check the diff recall, and get a good diagnostic (prob IID tool) so I could diagnose problems and DIY as much as possible. I have a Classic I've restored for sunday best, so am OK with DIY work, and have a good independent tech to call on for bigger jobs.

I'm unsure over if it would leave me stranded though; I'm aware the keys can stick in the ignition, and that the steering column ECU can fail, meaning non only non-start, but a £1200 replacement. (Just had this on my BMW to the tune of £700!). I had the BMW 3.0 engine in a 330d and loved it, so I know the issues there (injectors/turbo if not left to idle etc). NO swirl flaps in RR, thank gosh.

I'm aware that cars out there of this age and mileage aren't spontaneously combusting, but what is the consensus on running a 100k TD6, over, say, a pre-'06 100k D3 TDV6? Both will be about the same MPG, and the same tax. The more I look into both, the more I convince myself either will blow up!

Thoughts?

Paradiddle, I would go for it, I have a TD6. 04, that has done 110K, all the issues happened between 60K and 80K, not to say you wont have them BUT, when you are sitting at the lights in a Disco and an L322 pulls up beside you, I guarantee you will regret it, they (JLR) can all go wrong but don't always Thumbs Up

for that kind of budget you might be able to pick up an early facelift and if not certainly a 2005 'hybrid' with the touchscreen nav..

Why would you do all that unless they were already broken?

By the way, I can now do a (not very good) paradiddle. Took ages of practice.

I actually like the original dash - lovely with the cherry wood cappings.

I'd change the 'box, particuarly, because that is the most likely thing that would stop the car - and me getting to a job to earn money. (Self Employed).

The L322 attracts me for better motorway cruising - and the fact the body doesn't have to come off for any jobs, unlike the D3.

The D3 is perhaps a little cheaper to buy, but, would it be any cheaper to maintain, when it went wrong? particularly if the body has to come off for something, or suspension work came to call....

It is a little like choosing which way you'd like to die!

If I were you, I'd go for a facelift Td6, if your budget allows this ? (ie an 05 / 55 / 06 ) That being said, there are alot of expensive 03 / 04 cars out there, so maybe there's not much difference.

On the D3 argument, from the stories my independent LR garage tells me, I'd stay well clear. They regularly hand out bills for several thousands of pounds.
The D3 appears to suffer from many suspension woes, not to mention total engine failure . . .

I have no doubt to choose the L322 is the most amazing car i ever had!

But i'm suspect i always love the L322 since it came out! i like the look of the D3, but i think is not the same championship! Like a classic is totally different from a D2... and if you have an Classic and you love it, you should have an descendent! Smile Ex-FULLFATTY now downgraded

Ok, so td6 owners, what work have your cars needed in the last 2 years?

I've had a dealer friend offer to source me a RR at trade, so am already a little ahead of the pack.

My concern is making one reliable, over having the newest/fanciest spec.

Had mine 3.5 years/50k miles - now at nearly 120k and 11 years old.

It had the gearbox done by the pervious owner.
Some new injectors.
New steering rack.
New battery.
Precautionary change of radiator.
4 wheel alignment done once.
New disks and pads.
New tyres (summer and winter set).
Some underbody corrosion treatment, and the rear wheel arches treated.

The injectors and steering rack weren't cheap, but in all not bad for a car of this age/mileage.

I sometimes commute in it, but normally use the other car. There's nothing to stop me doing so though. To be honest, although it'll never be cheap to run it feels like it has another 100k in it at least. Famous last words maybe. Laughing

Would I like to rely on it if it was my only car and business. Hmm, difficult one that. Probably not, but not many cars are that reliable, especially when they're ten years or so old. If you don't mind a bit of down time every now and then - go for it! Thumbs Up

I've had a D3 and FL and to be honest theres no comparison.
A mate of mine runs an approved independent service centre and the TDV6 engine is a nightmare at high miles. They are coming in with so many problems its unreal.
I would go with L322 over any of them.

Have a look at what Stan has recommended, or ask to speak to Craig at Cam-Tec he's in the know of whats about.

Wales 2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Zambezi Silver

'03 TD6. 106k. Had it nearly 3 years.

Twice it has broken down, first time it needed a front half axle, second time Gearbox. Both a bit pricey but it has done a decent mileage after all.

I have changed brakes all round and replaced the battery, thats about all it has needed. I get 25 mpg average. 30 mpg on long runs.

I love the car Smile No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Epsom Green

Had my TD6 for 3yrs now and I've had to replace the fuel pump under the car, one CV boot and one brake dust shield as it was rattling.

Other than that its just been routine servicing, vehicle has just clocked up 106000 miles.

One thing I did was have it remapped, it makes the car so much more quieter, but that's personal choice. Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty,nothing else matters.

Paradiddle, if you look at some of my earliest posts, I am the ultimate example of how NOT to buy a second hand FFRR.

I bought a 2002 HSE (with factory vogue upgrades such as rear heated seats, sunroof etc) untested and unseen at an auction, with the guidance of a pal who was a (very bad) second hand car dealer (he mainly sold everything at a loss Rolling with laughter ).

it had 76,000 miles and all i did over nearly 4 years was oil and filter changes. The compressor was a bit slow so bought a second hand one from a forum member for £150. NOthing ever went wrong electronically or mechanically. I did several trips of up to 2,000 miles to Europe and it never went wrong adn got 28 MPG at 80 mph Motorway!!

A friend of mine bought it off me with c. 100,000 miles and absolutely loves it! Again still trooping on fault-free.

SO it seems you have to pick carefully and look for one that has been looked after (mine was a lawyer's previously so had an easy life)

PS it will cost c.25p per mile on fuel on avge. I would have the EGR blanked if I were you.
