dog guard gun rack clips

ive seen a few FFRR with dog guard gun clips for carrying your gun one above the other a good idea but this cannot be legal to use because

1) your gun is on show to everyone
2) it could be nicked by everyone
3) and it just seems a STUPID thing to use

whats your oppinions as i would rather use a secure steel case hidden away in the boot (emphisis on hidden away )

The point to the dog guard gun clips are purely for transportation, somewhere safe and secure to hold it whilst driving, not for leaving it there in the car.

Once you are on the shoot you'll either have the gun with you or you'll be in the car anyway.

Those boot space lock boxes have been known to be a nightmare. If you lose the keys, you are screwed. No one can get new ones cut, LR can offer no assistance and the manufacturer wont help either. I know cos I had a mate with one in a RR he bought. It was locked and he wanted to use it. Its bolted to his floor and he can't open it just to take it out unless someone drills through the locks and trashes it.

Gun racks, I think, are fairly pointless, especially when combined with a dog! You're bumping along, moving on to the next drive with a teasel covered muddy dog in the back and an unslipped gun in the rack without any protection. Far better to slip it between drives.

When you're on a public road, the gun should be out of sight and preferably locked in a suitable container. As a halfway house measure, put the fore-end in the glovebox and chain the guncase to one of the luggage points in the back. Never leave it in the car overnight or for an extended period of time, if it is stolen you haven't got a leg to stand on legally and the police will throw the book at you. You may even find your insurance company make a fuss if they didn't know you carried guns sometimes. Hope this helps. Rules are made for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.

Top Tip, and its cheap! all you need is a jigsaw, 8 no 12 2" wood screws, drill, screwdriver and a few brain cells.

get a sheet of 8 x 4 plywood, cut to shape to fit bottom of carpeted load bay area. Mount onto 4 wood spaces 4" deep (blocks of wood) - or whatever depth takes your fancy (depends how many guns you have got!). You then have a false bottom to your load bay, your guns can be slid beneath it through the open end with the lower tailgate down. Your dog box and other shooting gear goes on top of the new loadbay floor.

You may need to experiment where the exact location of the spaces are to go so that you can slip your sleeved guns in easily.

If you really want to be posh cover the new floor with carpet, the only way anyone can see guns are in the car is if the tailgate is lowered and the guns are slid out.

Similar can also be created by modifying a standard wooden pallet - but these can be a bit hefty.

Gun racks on dog guards are a blooming pain, you can't reach them readily, the guns are on show, they don't usually take a gun in a slip and you end up looking like a hick from Alabama! Shocked

Thats it, great minds think alike Cool - the design is only limited by your imagination, I have a purpose built dog box in mine - keeps everything clean and the dog is warm and comfortable and imho feels safer.
