What you up to?

The in and out movement of the steering colum decided to stop working last week, there was a clunk and the wheel wouldn't move out, it would still go up and down, just not in and out. Turns out that the electric motor for it is held on to the steering colum by a plastic clip which gets brittle and snapped off meaning the motor was lying loose inside the dash, (hence the clunking noise)

Taking pretty much all of the dash out was the only way to access it properly , I could get one hand in from the side of the dash to hold the motor up, but couldnt't quite reach in from the bottom of the footwekk to secure the motor back in place.

The square arm thing slots into the back of the spindle..

BUT why did you moved the steering wheel to the wrong side ?  All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

looks like you have done a good job there mate, i had to take my passenger side out just to get to 2 screws that hold the cd box into the glove box as a cd was stuck lol now i need to get my radio out as all the pixels have gone dead

How many nuts, bolts and screws had you got left after the job was supposed to be finished  Currently running FFRR MY10 TDV8 3.6L and a Disco 3 XS Commercial (tank like but very effective as a Company van). Plus one mint condition Track Day Car in the form of an E36 M3 3.2L Evolution circa June 1996 with lots of go faster bits and only 52k miles on the clock! Oh, plus a few bits to make it slow down really quickly as well! Luvverly.

2 screws and a trim clip, I know where the screws are from though, they go in under the passenger air bag before the glovebox goes in, so I'll have to whip the glovebox back out. I think the trim clip is off the passenger kick panel somewhere. 2006 Mercedes CLS

hi m44k, well done, take my hat of to you, i get such a buzz when i do things like that, cant be giving hard earned money to dealers unless i cant do the job.. did you disconnect the battery! V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Brave man, I could easily take that al apart however the issue would come putting it back how it was  TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

i have a magic tool for that and i use it all the time....a camera...it has saved me many times when it comes to plugs, wiring, fixings ect, wont start a job with out it... V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

I didn't disconnect the battery, I probably should have as I had the CD changer unplugged and the light switch, but everything still works as it should so I guess it's a success If there's any problems, I have an OBD scanner and nav coder to check out any faults.

There wasn't alot to it really, most of the car is held together with T20 (i think) torx screws and the occasional T30 like for the steering shrouds, biggest pain was getting the vents out the dash without damaging them, but I found 2 terminal screwdrivers in opposite corners of the locating tabs and they pop out a treat.

Even treated it to a wash and polish tonight, then the rain started just as I put everything away Typical!!! 2006 Mercedes CLS

Absolutely - although these jobs can seem messy: anything that can be done without being robbed by a dealer is indeed a bonus!

My thoughts exactly, me and my dad reckoned for a main dealer to do that, it would have been about £500, then they would probably say that it needs either a new motor and plastic bracket.

They're such an easy car to work on really, everything has been thought out really well, some cars I've worked on, you have to have triple jointed wrists just to reach some of the fixings. 2006 Mercedes CLS
