I read a similar article on Google slowly closing Android (partly because of the here referred Amazon Android version without the Google apps). It will be interesting to see what happens.

I will be keeping an eye on this of course and if it gets too "closed" for my liking, I may be switching to something else, like Ubuntu Smile I was planning to play with Ubuntu on my now old and obsolete HP Pavillion that is running on Vista (was looking at running it on Chrome OS but that seems in the too hard basket).

Will have to wait for a bit because the HP Pavillion will be seafreighting its way to Singapore.

I think there will always be open and closed ecosystems and as long as there is enough openness for me I will stay with Android and/or Google until something better comes along or it goes into decline.

Don't you love it all these developments going on in the world of user and work electronics ?? Smile I do and I'm not even an IT-er (well currently I am the IS manager but the new job is back to my "normal work" of offshore construction projects). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I played with Ubuntu 3 or 4 years ago, as I had the notion of using it as a media platform to service my house with video, audio and home automation.

Getting it all to work was more than my puny computer skills could master though. So ended up using Sonos for the Audio bit and Windows media centres (WMC) for TV/ Video content. Gave up on the home automation part though, as couldn't find any real user friendly setup that did what I wanted it to.

Still using the Sonos system to deliver audio around the house, but have switched from WMC to Sky & a couple of Apple TV's for the visual element and also dabbled with Elgato hardware in between. I like the simplicity of how the Apple TV works, but also really, really frustrated by its lack of useable apps in the UK market Censored Sky is great at what it does, but won't let you share saved content to other media, again a major frustration.

Ubuntu offers a tantalising glimpse of how a joined up integrated system could/should work, so hope you have more success than I could achieve Thumbs Up Should've been old enough to know better...doh!

Good luck in Asia Thumbs Up

Over the years I've tried many, many set ups and have concluded that I only really have 2 options - submit to a closed ecosystem or spend lots of effort trying to make something else work reliably - and keep it working.

I agree with B9er - Apple have a very promising piece of kit with the TV, but the content is overly restricted.

These days, I just don't have the time, so I've submitted to Apple (for the moment at least) - it costs more money, but it just works.

I got all Apple kit (iPhone, iMac, Apple TV and an iPad) for the same reason I got a RR - years of bland company policy be it cars or IT and I wanted a change. I got to say I like both even after 3 or 4 years.
So I guess I'm a fanboy both FFRR and Apple for the time being Thumbs Up Geoff
