L405 SDV8 needs service after 6 months -7000miles!!!

My L405 SDV8 needs a service after doing just under 7,000 miles. It is nearly 6 months old.

A mate of mine had the same issue - the dealer told him it was because of the way the car is being used.

It seems a bit of an unlikely coincidence.

Does this sound normal?

I see from the service book that RRs sold in some other countries have a much shorter service interval. Is it possible our cars have been set up wrongly?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Scott

Shocked That can't be right... What does it say in the handbook about time and distance before a service?

The service book suggests 16,000miles!

I had a BMW that did that. It's a money spinner for the dealer!

I was told its down to the short trip style driving. Think its a load of bullocks myself!

I asked my mate a bit more about his car as he has had the oil change done.

They told him it was to do with the diesel particulate filter recycling, though he couldn't remember everything.

I wonder if the DPF recycling involves injecting additional diesel into the engine with a view to burning the particulates away - but - if the recycling is interrupted, the diesel runs past the piston rings and dilutes the oil?

Apparently this can happen in some cars and the oil can get so thin that the engine suffers catastrophic wear.

Maybe someone with a bit more mechanical knowledge than I could examine this theory?

Either way I guess it is a cost of ownership I must accept.

If only there was a way of knowing when a recycling is needed or when it was actually happening then I could plan journeys to allow it to complete.....

If you're only doing short journeys the DPF can get clogged up

Needs a good run out on a motorway for 30mins plus every couple of weeks for it to recycle

A search on here will throw up a couple of threads with comments from people more knowledgable than me.... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

To be honest if you are leaving it for the manufacturer service interval your pushing it to far IMO.

A diesel likes clean oil and by the time it passes 6-7k its well on its way to useless. I always recommend 1/2 a manufacturers interval as oil and filters are cheap as chips when done at an Indy or the like(and still maintains you warranty) and your engine will be so much better for it.

The DPF issue could also trigger the shorter oil lifespan warning and thus trigger the service indicator.

DPF cars really need a good run at 30-0mins sat at 60 constantly to burn he DPF crud out.

Once its out of warrant the best thing to do is get the DPF replaced with a small silencer box of the same dimensions and then delete the DPF in the CCF and ECM Smile more ponies and remove the EGR's as well Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Thanks for the info.

Yes - clean oil at 7,000 miles makes sense. By the time the car has done 15,000 miles - the first service - the oil must be really tired.

It's probably my own fault. When I first got the car I was driving non stop as I enjoyed it so much and we had cracking weather this year.

Recently I have not been getting the bigger journeys in so the DPF is probably not getting cleaned too well.

There is a process that is controlled by plug in diagnostics to purge the DPF carried out during service. It involves the car being revved at 4000 rpm for several minutes to generate heat.
Modern cars with 8 speed boxes don't rev under normal driving. Mercedes had this issue with several models and tech release said to tell owners to use 5th only on motorways to generate heat as 6th was to low revving to complete recycle.
The service indicator is set at pdi by dealer so any mileage limit is set at that point. Probably no bad thing to change the oil, I used to always get oil changed at around 2000 miles on new cars to get rid of build swarf and particles new engines generate. Not so long ago that new engines came with "running in oil" TDV8 Vogue SE 2009.

It seems there was a reason for having a service every 6 months / 7,000 miles.

The secondary turbocharger was leaking oil into the exhaust and this was coating the diesel particulate filter with a film, causing excessive regenerations.

The secondary turbocharger doesn't have an oil return which can carry a sufficient oil flow. Back pressure causes the oil to leak into the exhaust.

This is a known issue which is resolved by creating a second oil return path.

The technical bulletin has reference LTB00524v5 4.4 TDV8 Exhaust Smoke.

Affected vehicles have VIN ranges DA000011-EA144253, model years 2013-2014.
