Hi all - thought I'd ask as a work colleague is torn between a couple of vehicles. He was wondering whether the G-Wagen was worth a shot as he's looking to change from an X5, and wasn't overly impressed with the Cayenne.

Any feedback/opinions welcome.

Does he use it only occasionally or actually go offroad?

If the answer to either is no, I'd look at something else.
The G-Wagen is a good offroad car and very strong. But coming from An X5/Cayenne perspective they are backwards utility vehicles with a rufty-tufty idealism. Yes, it may be more fun. But give it a few months and unless he starts offroading he'll wonder why he is putting up with it when he used to have a nice driving X5.

I drove Defenders to commute to work for 5 years before finally giving in and getting the FFRR. I love Defenders, but it's an icon. Not a comfortable commuter. Any X5, Cayenne or other LR product will do a commute in more comfort and with more driver involvement. Now I just have one for fun use only. The G wagen is much the same. It's certainly no drivers car, while the X5 is regarded as a very on-road focused vehicle.

That's my take on it anyway.

You buy a G Wagon because you need one.
Not because you have something else and fancy a change. The novetly can wear off.

Not entirely sure which variant he's looking at - all I know is it's a brand new RHD @ roughly £80k. G-Wagens aren't really my speciality subject. I'll need to find out more.

Yes, great fun as a hobby car, but every day?

There is something great about slipping a Supercharged V8 into an old ex-military offroader.
Then firming the suspension up so its less good offroad, but can actually go round corners without going through the nearest hedge.

I'd love the power and straight line speed, but remember the design of the vehicle is something like 30/40 years old.
Lots of wind noise, tyre noise, crashy suspension over any bumps (thanks to AMG tweaking) and the need to work the steering to keep it sraight at speeds it was never designed for would eventually wear a bit thin.

For me, it's just a weekend warrior. Great fun, but in small doses.

Sat next to one in traffic today (actually - looked down upon one ) - they do not look as though they have very much room in them - driver looked very cramped and was sat bolt upright against wheel - I could understand them being compared to newer Defenders, but against a FFRR/a Sport /a Cayenne or an X5? - I do not see it as a realistic competitor.

Honestly my neighbour has a brand new G500 - they are very well finished BUT very small inside... BUT on the other side still have that certain touch of class just like the FFRR  All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

Eventually got fed up with speculating owners and dealers.

forget the G Wag, Cayenne and X5, there is ONLY one Range Rover, the rest are just cheap poor copies by budget car makers trying to jump on the bandwagon.

Yes, they were designed as utilitity vehicles yonks ago... just like the Defender's ancestors.
And as much as I love Defenders they are also cramped. Some call it character.

Maybe people were smaller 60 years ago?
