You have to put the woodburner on a fireproof base i.e. stone anyway don't you? If I were getting one I'd get a big slab of granite or thick slate. Discovery 4 HSE

That's the idea. There was a fireplace there before when I bought the house and it was encased in 5" thick stone - you couldn't even see the fire. An hour after having a fire roaring away inside it was still cold, but the next day, long after the fire had gone out it was still warm. That was taking things too far and I threw it out, which was an exercise in itself. What I wanted was if you get in and the house is cold you can quickly add heat, which this does perfectly.

Yes you do. When I pulled out the old fire place the wooden battens behind the plasterboard were badly charred. I was quite shocked as it was very dangerous. Amazing the house hadn't gone up in flames. So when I put this one in I had the chimney redone by a firm and the fire department came round and advised.

They put a steel liner in the chimney and a fire proof panel in the ceiling where it goes in. They said there must be 2cm of fermacel behind the fire and the fire must be on a fire proof base - e.g. stone. It had to be 10cm from the wall and 20cm from any wood.

I'm confident it's now safe - don't want to burn in my bed!

Actually, that's one advantage these fires have over open fires, you can stock them full of wood, close the door and go to bed.

Strange that kurt as they tend to keep me warm...

Downside is it does mean i burn thru rather a lot of kcals a day and eat like a horse when im not having a 'hot dinner' Smile

I knew all fireplaces had to be on some form of non-combustible surface but it just looks nice the way it all matches up Smile

To me i like the idea of just getting it going, stocking it and then leaving it for hours to do its thing but the back boiler ones are the ones i fancy in years to come Smile

I quite like the ugliness of this bad boy at the moment Smile

This was my original fireplace - very Swiss. You could stock it up and leave it, but I hated it. You couldn't see the fire and it would take an age to heat the place. Also, why would you want a bulls head in your lounge?

When I removed it I found these wooden battens behind it.

Up close.

Really quite shocking which is why I got professional help installing the new fire. When I showed the fire officer the pic he was stunned. He said if some oxygen had gotten behind the membrane the house would've gone up in flames in no time.

This is the plate they put in the ceiling.

I asked them about the damp-proof plastic membrane and insulation and they said fine as long as the fire was 10cm from the wall and there was 2cm of fermacel. Oh, and that I used rockwool insulation.

That Bruno thing kicks out a fair amount of heat. 26kw, how big is your house?

Been busy Monday and Tuesday evenings. Today had a few beers after work (alkoholfrei), got home and had a bash on my drums (finally making progress with my paradiddles) and watched Stan's documentary on the Costa Concordia while I ate my pizza.

Just turned the lights out and am now watching the boys from Brazil, one of the few films where the English guy plays the goodie and the American guy plays the baddie. You'd never guess Gregory could play that evil Mengele so well. What an evil man that guy was. Shame he didn't come to a sticky end in real life.

Her father was a German soldier but I think that's the closest link to Mengele you'll find.

She lives in Zermat now, but I've never bumped into her there.

There's more to it than that... Gonna have to google it now.

Edit...

In large part the documentary traces the effect on Norway of the Nazis' plan during the 1930s and 1940s to create a race of Aryan supermen through a programme the regime called Lebensborn (literally, life fount).

This large scale eugenics experiment, which was principally supported by the SS, sought to produce "racially pure" children by encouraging SS men to breed with German women (wives or not) of good Aryan, or Nordic, stock.

After the German invasion of Norway in 1940, the Nazis decided to include that country in the Lebensborn programme because Norwegians were considered by Nazi racial fanatics to be a pure Nordic-Aryan people.

During the war, around 10,000 children were born to Norwegian mothers as a result of relationships with German soldiers. In the postwar period, once the fathers had been booted back to Germany, these mothers - considered collaborators - and their offspring were subjected to sometimes appalling treatment by their fellow Norwegians.

All these children were treated as traitors and/or potential fascists by their fellow citizens and hundreds were even put into mental institutions immediately after the war. Previously..
