Actually, it looked like it paused when it was on its 'knee' as they called it. Then it moved rapidly into the water then slowed down as it settled.

I think what they did is filled the caissons with water to help it right itself, then when it was on its 'knee' they drained them, hence the pause. Then it moved rapidly into the water, but slowed down with the buoyancy of the caissons.

Just my take.

Always impressed watching 'Strand Jacks' in action. They look like Fagioli's?
I thought the next phase was to install more caissons on the Stb side?? Regards

Yes, they fix up the starboard side and then float it off - sometime next year.

In the words of Lew Grade wouldn't it 'be cheaper to lower the sea'?

Kurt, if it wouldn't have been a marine sanctuary, you (or Lew) would probably be right. Just build a concrete wall around it, like a dock, pump (and keep pumping) the water out, cut the vessel into pieces and remove everything. Then break down the wall and use it for an artificial reef in the deeper section. But I guess that politically that would not be a good option, even if it would make more sense financially. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Well, I know it was expensive but I'm very glad things like this aren't allowed to be dumped in the sea any more. I hate the environmental pollution that is dumped into the sea and just because it's out of sight it gets no attention.

Example, something like 3000 cetaceans die each year through being trapped in nets or swallowing rubbish. This is way less than all the dreadful whaling that's going on.

</rant>

Good idea with the wall though.

I know some old ships are dumped for reefs but these are very carefully prepared.

I have been diving some of those prepared wrecks/reefs, most notably the Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand (the one that was sunk by the French Secret Service, IDIOTS). Also an old gunboat in Eilat.

It is quite strange floating through an empty ship and think of its previous purpose(s) and now see it sitting on the seabed. I do think artificial reefs are a good idea in places that have become or are barren but not when there is already a natural balance.

Anyway, I thought it was quite cool to see the Concordia slowly tilting over, they surely did a good job on that. I wonder how long it will take them to get the wreck removed now. Probably another 6 to 12 months, looking at the damage on the starboard side. I wonder if they were aware of the extent of damage on that side and taken it into account in their plans. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Interesting documentary, but why do they always have the stupid dramatic narration?

Also, it's not front, back, left and right on a ship. It's bow, stern, port and starboard.
