Been up Jungfraujoch - pic heavy

After promising myself for 10 years to visit Grindelwald in the summer and go up Jungfraujoch I finally did it.

I can see Eiger, Monk and Jungfrau from my house. Here they are - 70km away.

For some reason the Swiss thought it would be a good idea to have a railway going through the mountains to the pass between Jungfrau (the highest mountain in Switzerland) and the Eiger - Joch means pass in German. The railway was started in 1896 and finished 16 years later. I can't imagine constructing a railway that goes 3500m high through almost 9km of granite using as you can see fairly primitive tools. Nuts.

This is the first stop - Eigerwand. Change here for Paddington, Baker Street and the Jubilee line.

You get off the train and there are some windows on the North face of the Eiger, approx where the red cross is in this picture.

I do have a fear of heights and I was too chicken to get any closer to the window than this.

My friend did get close but as you can see it was cloudy, so here's someone elses picture to show you the view to Grindelwald. Pretty scary considering you're way less than half way up!

Next stop is Eismeer, which is 300m higher and where the Aletsch Glacier starts.

Next we reached our destination - Jungfraujoch. This is looking North towards Germany. I've seen these mountains from the Black Forest on a clear day - 120km's away. Remember, this is still some 700m below the top of Jungfrau.

Remember the pic from Eismeer where the glacier starts?

That was only a tributary. Here three tributaries meet and this is the Aletsch in full flow - the largest glacier in Europe - 23 km's long. A glacier picks up stones, etc as it goes along and when it merges with another you get these black lines. I've seen it before - actually hiked on it, but from the other end at Bettmeralp.

Here is an ice corridor under the glacier that they've cut. It moves 15cm a year.

Someone carved a Sherlock Holmes statue - the Reichenbach Falls where he fought Moriarty are near by.

We tried to go on one of the walks but it was too bright - we'd forgotton to bring sun glasses. So we had lunch and then went back down to Kleine Scheidegg, then walked down to Grindelwald. Eiger is to the right of this picture here, and stayed resolutely in cloud unfortunately.

I thought this was a pretty stupid place for a house, although to be fair the trees seem to have survived so maybe there aren't any avelanches.

I've been above 3000m plenty of times before and not had a problem, but this time I had nausea, and fell asleep on the train when it was going back down the mountain. It couldn't have been for more than 20 mins but it felt like hours.

By the way, if you want a perspective on climbing the Eiger North Face check out this video of Ueli Steck doing it in 2 hours 47 minutes. Every time I watch it I involuntary produce some poo.

All in all it was a grand day out!

Is that the current amount of snow up there or was this a while back David?

It was on Monday - there's always snow up there. The ski areas around Grindelwald were still green though. No skiing yet, apart from on certain high up areas and glaciers which never close - but it's not great skiing so better to wait for the season to start.

It was expensive - chf 177 for my friend - that's £120. I have a special card so it was only chf 85 for me. It was worth it, but I didn't have to bring a family!

If you do go, take sunglasses and do the walk to the Mönchsjochhütte, which is about 45 mins each way. I will do this next time.

Prepare for the cold. It was -5°C early in September.

And go early as there is lots to do - so make the most of it!
