Digital or Analogue Tuner

This might be a stupid question, but I'm not really sure whether my TV tuner is digital or analogue - car is a '56 reg TD6 Vogue SE.

I was certainly TOLD that it was digital by the charming dealer and, as it wasn't on the top of my concerns, I've not really thought about it since. However, it's bothering me now - wouldn't I expect to see at least some of the additional freeview channels? I only ever find BBC 1 & 2, ITV1, Channnel 4 and Channel 5 and this suggests to me that it's analogue only. I'd also expect digital TV to display the channel name, but confusingly, it seems to do this for ITV and Channel 5 (and maybe Channel 4 - can't remember) but never for BBC. Confused

What's the easiest way of telling for sure? I might add this to my long lists of complaints against the useless dealers!

Actually, I've just had a proper look at it and I think I can answer my own question - it is an analogue tuner and my dealer friend was giving me bullsh*t!

Having said that, I'd still like to know when the spec changed and what's the definitive way to prove which a car has if anyone can help please.

Thanks!

Sounds like you have analogue system.

On your touch screen display press the TV-DVD 'button' - your tv reception should appear in top left of display and on the right you should have buttons 1 - 9 with a MANUAL button at the bottom centre.

Is there an AUTO button as well? (beneath bottom right corner of screen)

I think I am correct in saying, if there is an AUTO button it would be a digital system?

The AUTO button scans all available stations and lists them for you on several pages using (< >) buttons

My old TD6 '05reg was analogue system. (without auto button) BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4 & occasionally C5

Guessing the digital tv was introduced on '55reg - '06 reg cars, so i'm not sure why yours isn't digital?

My current TDV8 '56reg has a digital system. (with auto button) As above + E4, BBC3, Film4, Babestation etc.

I wouldn't worry to much however - the tv reception has been crap on both and I don't bother with it Whistle

Has this helped you Question

Probably not Exclamation

Hmmm. yes I do have the Auto button thanks, but it's never been able to find more than 4/5 stations - certainly not enough to trouble having to look at additional pages! Agreed that the picture is mostly crap anyway, but it's bugging me now and I want to know!!!

I'm still confused as to which I have, as the facts seem contradictory, i.e.,

1. Can't find more than the 5 terrestrial stations = analogue
2. Some stations provide a named ID, e.g., 'ITV network' = Digital
3. Auto button = Digital?
4. Snowy picture interference looks more like analogue inteference than digital break-up = Analogue?

Any other thoughts from the great and the wise? Maybe the digital tuner came in with the TDV8????

Hi, mine was an analogue unit and it had an AUTO button. The auto is basically like you have on the TV at home, it just tunes in all available channels for you so you don't have to. The MANUAL button is the one you would use to search up or down for a TV channel. I've just replaced my old analogue one in the last month with a digital unit as where I live, there are no analogue channels anymore so the TV did nothing. Search on the forum for digital TV and you'll see all the threads already covering the topic. Cheers. Steve

Probably the auto button arrived with the touchscreen (which mine has), suspect you had the older BMW head unit if it was an '05 RR. Very Happy Steve

Mines an 07 and has digital tv and an auto button. I don't think it looks that different from a screen point of view except when I press auto I get about 20 free view channels on average.

There's a box you can change that will give u digital. A guy was selling them on here for 300 sobs.
