If you have M&S on the tyres you are legally ok, but a dedicated winter set is a far better and safer option, and no bad thing to have in the UK anyway.

If it was me then I'd keep an eye on the bay for a really cheap set of 18/19" alloys and then buy some tyres to go on them. Nearly new Scorps come up quite often in pairs or singles and when they have 6+mm of tread still on them they are very good tyres in the snow. Once they get under 5mm you can see the snow part of the tread is worn down and feel it in the car as well Sad

Also stick some snow socks on the shopping list Smile They are cheap and worth the money if you get really stuck or some chains if you get a scruffy set of alloys. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I've got a set of 5 18in twin spoke alloys with no tyres fitted.
Alloys are in really good clean condition, one has a slight kerbing mark.
Ideal for use with winter tyres. Wink Whistle

They are a legal requirement in the Alps anyway.

With decent winter tyres, you almost certainly won't need them, but you have to be carrying a set.

True but there are many that get away without having them as the worst that usually happens is people get turned back down the mountain with some rare ones getting fined... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I'm going to be in the Market for a set of Winter wheels / tyres as well in the next month.
Not sure what size to get though (to replace the 20's on the SC) Regards

Indeed - when it snows heavily, the Police may set up camp at the base of the mountain and make people fit their chains. If you can't, you are refused access.

That may be an acceptable risk to you, but I don't fancy hiding around the corner until the snow stops and the Police move away - because finding FFRR sized chains at a local petrol station won't be easy !

I run 20's & they've been great - I know people recommend higher sidewalls, so smaller wheels, but I've been perfectly happy with 20" Vreds.

I drove to Austria and back on 18" wrangler M&S adn now have 19" Pirelli M&S. deeper tyre wall means that if things get really sticky (and I had NO probs at all when travelling through the storms of 2 years ago) then you have a little cushion if you slide into a kerb and wont damage a wheel.

Wouldn't want to go bigger than 20? though? Whistle
