Are they all rusty?

Hi, ive been looking for the right FFRR for the last month now.
been after a 55plate so to get facelift front and touch screen but still lower road tax. (prefer silver or grey)

Viewed 4 now and all been poor condition, every one had at least one panel reprayed, rust on rear arches sometimes bubbleing over so on show. Boot lids poor and some looking like there separating.
One dealer was getting it taken to be touched up and sprayed but don't want a rusty car just sprayed over.

I expect for the age some stone chips, minor scratches but for cars between £11000 to £14000 at 80.000 miles on some the have not fared well.
The interior trim has also not been upto the standard I would of liked, 2 were ok and 2 had bits damaged/missing and very worn.

Shall I give up? Are they all like this in this price range or is the right car out there.

Not even got as far as test drives as body was so poor but all look good in photos, would not pay £14000 for a good looking car at 6 foot.

They are all prone to rust on the tailgate and arches and if not dealt with soon enough tailgate will need replacement. You are right to walk away. I think if you could stretch your budget a bit more you might find a better example. There is a few on here at present for sale and site sponsor Gaz might be able to source what your looking for. Also if you use search function re rust you can read more about what to look for and in the wiki there is a guide as to what to check when buying.Take you r time and read as much as you can on site valuable info from many experts and long term owners Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

There are mint ones out there if you look long enough. I sold one of my RR's recently, No rust, 1 owner with 80k on the clock, FLRSH, no dinks or damage, every receipt and MOT etc - its just a case of finding the right one. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Re: Are they all rusty?

Hi,

They are lovely cars if well looked after and all is going well (you still need to be alert even if the car has been maintained regardless of cost and well looked after, if not you could get badly bitten).

You seem particular and you do need to have your eyes wide open, no matter who is selling. Doing the homework is key, as is being realistic about your expectations reference the car and about your expectations around your buying budget. As for your after sales maintenance budget, unless you are a competent mechanic type, be very realistic about that too.

There are many invaluable threads and sources on this very constructive, friendly forum. Here's 2 threads to start you off based on my recent buying experience and hopefully they will be of some assistance:

Thanks for the info, will not give up just yet then. Just reluctant to travel to far to view when I've wasted my time viewing the last 4. But as you say, the right one is out there, somewhere!

United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black

I just got a 2009 car with 40k miles. The tailgate top is rusty and bubbled right across the seam. New tailgate is £1256 plus vat plus paint and labour. Took car to aproaved body shop who said they would treat and paint as guarantee wouldn't cover new panel. Rolling Eyes the rust is coming from inside out so again, little point in just painting over the problem Thud Thud TDV8 Vogue SE 2009.

"... rust is coming from inside out so again, little point in just painting over the problem"

I put this very point to MD over a week ago (car been with them approaching 2 weeks now for works). Response still pending.

I do think some of the rusty areas on these cars are avoidable if owners are more careful though (eg rear arches).

Don't give up - your car is out there somewehere. No, they aren't all rusty sheds ! You approach is spot on, looking at plenty of cars. That being said, don't be tempted to lower your standards because of what you have seen already.

I'm on my second L322 car now. I've bought both cars virtually over the 'phone and had to travel some distance to collect. What I have done on both is rigourously check the owner & service history. I would not go anywhere near a car where the owner has seen fit to add cosmetic nonsense, but scrimped on maintenance. These things are very easy to check by one or two calls before viewing.

The car I've just bought is a '55 AJV8 Vogue - one owner - full LR history - lower tax - and very much in your price bracket. No, it's not perfect, but the few jobs it needs are all easy fixes.

Keep looking !

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Also of note is that you often get issues with the mixing of metals on the door frames. The aluminium reacts with the steel bubbling up under trims etc. I'm not sure if it is as serious as normal rust but it is common on the upper door frames etc. Tom

Mines still for sale ! Not been seen by anyone yet, absolutely no rust anywhere. In fact if you decide to have a look and can find any, i will pay your travel costs !
it is also well priced considering the low miles, condition and spec.

I will eventually advertise it in the usual places, but at the moment its only on here.

Regards
Andy
