hi,can some one tell me what the noise is when i accelerate it doesnt do it at normal driving ,i have had it scanned and no faults,i was told today it could be exhaust manifold leaking ,has anybody else had this problem,also some people have said it could be intercooler,any help would be much appreciated,thanks.

I have something like this which was traced to the viscous fan. Does it happen when very warm, from a stand still then accelerate and it sounds somewhat like a jet engine?.

As David P said, i would suspect that the viscous fan is the culprit, if its hot outside and the engine is warm then this is normal, if it does it permanently the fan has seized on. Its a common fault, and some have simply removed it and have no problems, but i would suggest a replacement they are not an horrific price. If you do remove it then make sure the rest of the coolant system is in good order (flush and new coolant, fins are clear ect) and keep an eye on the temp gauge, but they are only really needed in hotter climates.

If the noise is more of a whine than a woosh, i would ask if the breather filter has been changed recently (or better yet and worth doing anyway changed for a vortex type).

A split/holed turbo hose will result in a error code for boost pressure, so i doubt it will be that.

checked the fan that is ok,it does it when it is hot or cold,and no holes in any intercooler pipes,it is driving me mad trying to get to the bottom of it.

forgot to say vortox filter fitted.

Does it do it when stationary or only when driving? Also does the noise increase with road speed or just engine speed?

no it doesnt do it when stationary only when driving and you put your foot down as soon as the revs build it starts ,it is like a pessure valve going of although i know it is not a good explanation of the noise it is as though there is pressure build up and then leaking ,it has been remapped and fuel consumption is good.

i would have agreed with the viscous reply earlier, mine had failed when i got the car, and whooshed like hell, changed it and only wooshes for about 15 secs now and goes all quiet. So, if its still same after temp removing it...(32mm spanner and fan tool) then i would perhaps get a free exhaust check at the local exhaust centre. i had an old car go all 'strangle-ly' like it was retricted, and couldnt get rid of gas. the box had fallen to bits inside, and was rattly as hell when hit from underneath. -remember, its free and an opinion that could shed even more light on the matter.

i will take the viscous fan off tomorrow and try it i put a full stainless exhaust on it 12 mths ago will check that as well.i am in the process of fitting paddle shift i have ordered the paddles and i read with interest the topic on it ,i have sent matt stevenson a message for his help on the remote fitting ,thanks for all the help on the noise problem ,i will get there in the end .

you dont have to remove fan yet, you can test it with some help carefully (with a glove on) with engine off, reach in to grab the fan blades at the top, hold firmly, and get a friend to start the car, you are holding the fan, and can listen to the difference when revving. if you have to let go the fan, get hand out fast! better to turn engine off and then remove hand. its safe and quicker., and will tell you if you HAVE to remove it or not... p.s. i have got a pair of paddles too, and have left a wiring message on the paddle shifters topic page/to anyone that can help. -john.
