Back Box/Exhaust Box

From looking at the immaculate nature of RRUK's 08MY FFRR, I was pretty impressed at how amazing the exhaust back box looks...

Almost every late model L322 (11MY-) I see on the road (mine included) has a discoloured/peeling back box.

Anybody know the difference?

It's very common but very easy to rectify.

I used fine wire wool to rub mine down with a mix of APC (all purpose cleaner) on the 'box to degrease it. Then sprayed with a satin black heat-resistant fireplace spray paint. Si. <This is my name.

Re: Back Box/Exhaust Box

Hi, please see below a decent previous thread about the subject/ how to do it and from which I got the confidence to do 'mine'.

I used 2 tins of Hammerite/ you won't manage it with one tin IMO and I've plenty left over for occasional touch ups because when washing the car, twice now I've noticed 5p piece sizes of shiny metal on the black box and all I do is carefully clean it before giving the newly bare area a couple of 1/2 second bursts and you can't tell that I've touched in afterwards.

I wouldn't jet was the back box.

Dirty windows, scabby dirty wheels, crudded chrome exhaust tips and flaky back boxes like this really drag down the look of a nice car!

Thumbs Up

Thanks all. Is it just me that thinks it's pretty poor show for this to happen on cars of this cost?

No, it's not just you. My S/C when bought from Stratstone recently (and Ryan's too for that matter) had exactly the same.

It would have been lovely to see a nice machine polish and attention to detail, but alas...

I actually mentioned it to the sales manager after I did the work and he commented on how nice it looked and I don't honestly think they ever considered it. I really don't think, even after his comments, that they'll ever do it on future vehicles they supply either.

Look how many dealer supplied S/C RR's out there have grubby tailpipes and it tells you most don't even look below the bumper.

Then look at the generally poor standard of valeting (they don't 'detail') and that tells you the valeters don't have a clue and / or don't really care. They're given a set time to do each car and that's it.

To most customers, that's fine and way above what they'd do themselves. For the remaining 5% or so of us, it's just work we have to do. But then we do enjoy doing it, don't we... Mr. Green Si. <This is my name.

Interestingly the ones on the L405 aren't painted and are just silver!

Agreed. There was even a question on here several years ago asking "does this look like the right exhaust for an S/C?" to which the answer was "yes, they often look like scaffold tubes"

I thought mine was gubbed until I set about it with the Britemax stuff, didn't realise it was polished SS!!

Mine needs doing again and as part of the clean up I will get it done soon. Thumbs Up
