I appreciate that they are for the most part chalk and cheese, but can anyone offer an insight into how a (say) 2007 SC FFRR compares to a V10 Audi S8 (ie the shape that has just been superseded)?

I'm not really looking for a comparison between performance/handling on road or off road, as I can guess the outcomes there. I'm more interested in comfort, luxury, ride, build quality, road presence - that sort of thing.

Short answer is, they don't compare. You choose the one you prefer.

The only comparison I would make between the 2, is that if an Audi A8 came up behind you, it wouldn't have anywhere near the road presence of an RR!

You can't compare a FFRR with anything else, its the best car in the world!

That said, sometimes I want to hoon around in something that puts a smile on my face and scares me witless at the same time. Its called a Mini Cooper S JCW. Totally bonkers but a load of fun!

A defender… not

Had a sit in a 2010 vw Pheaton today, quite impressed, 4x4 all the toys cant help wondering what am i doing in a big expensive RR even as much as I like them just for the 2 weeks a year that it snows.

I looked at loads of cars when I was changing from my 06 ffrr and I really couldn't find anything that drives as well, FFRR are smooth and safe, all the German stuff was back breaking and as I already have a broken back I didn't want the hard ride. I could have saved a lot of money with an Audi Q8 but I went for 2012 FfRR

One other thing - I think I've read that the kerb weight of the 4.2SC is around 2.5 tonnes, and the 5.0 over 3 tonnes. Assuming those figures are right, does that weight ever feel like a bit too much of a handful under heaving braking or cornering (and yes, I do understand that a FFRR even in petrol guise is not a car to throw round corners like an Elise...!)?

For me it was very easy to decide.

All the big luxury barges were ruled out because they can't tow 3500kg, which is a fundamental requirement of mine.

Many of the cars that can tow 3500kg were ruled out as being noisy and uncomfortable.

What is left?

Maybe a Toureg, but really no. All later cars like late model X5's (which can tow 3500kg) and ML's, both of which are comfortable etc were more than I wanted to spend 3 years ago when I bought my RR. Also, they just didn't give me that feeling you need about a car that makes it more than an appliance.
