All of this has been carefully planned - since the post Diana low point, 'The Firm' have been very focused on their image and have some great marketing people in place.

The minor royals have been kept more in the background and we're given a smaller and younger set to focus on.

The car and the fact that he drove himself will all have been very deliberate decisions - and as you say - priceless advertising.

Just got back from Scotland after visiting for the Highland Games and as I drove back from Aberdeen one day in my black VSE I noticed HRH Princess Anne following driving her L405 with the requisite dark suit/white shirt/black tie next to her, on her way back to Balmoral. Also went to outside the church at Craithie on the Sunday morning after the games to see The Queen leaving after the service in her official Bentley, closely followed by 2 FFRR's full of suits. As we set off back to Ballater where we were staying with the caravan one of the RR's followed us back and even pulled up behind us and came into the local Co-op to buy their Sunday lunch! Had a good chat with them and discussed some of the "specials" fitted to theirs..................I can't tell you what they said as it's covered by the official secret act now and if I did tell you I'd have to kill you

a chap I used to work with had previously held a fairly senior position in the Royal Household and was also a top flight rally driver. You would never have known he was such a loony to look at him or see him drive a normal car.
When they were up Balmoral the Rozzers used to get him to rag their cars around to get an idea of what they could do.
