I had my windscreen changed last week and when i came to drive the FF I noticed that the screen was distorting my vision and giving me a headache. Strangely when I turned on the heated screen the distortion became really bad, it looked like heat waves going across the screen!

The screen is branded "FY" and was fitted by Auto Windscreens. They have agreed to change it for a different brand just in case this company have made a dodgy batch of screens. If anyone is replacing theirs soon it would be worth checking the "clarity" of vision through the new one before it is fitted.

I had a look at this, it was truly weird, never seen anything like it.

Looking from the passenger side you could see a ripple in the screen in front of the driver. Switching on the heated screen was funny, it was like looking through a heat haze in the desert!

Makes you wonder what "FY" might stand for...

Ive had poor experiences (distortions, prismatic effects etc) with non-genuine replacement screens and always insist on them now. Autoglass or whomever have to get approval from the insurers but it's been a formality on both FFRR and Discovery. Graham

Apparently the sensor for the autolights is built into the windscreen so they just plug the wires in when they fit the new screen - so that must be dodgy too.

When mine was changed (AA Windscreens) the fitter failed to seat the clips for the sensor pod properly. It caused the autolights to go "off" in the dark. Pretty frightening. Could be the same fault. It took the remediation fitter a couple of minutes to rectify. Graham

I know of an FFRR with the old rain/auto lights sensor stuck onto the replacement screen by the "professional" fitter with sticky pads

It fell off and the headlights went off, in the dark, on an Alpine road.

Mine are always on, which in the current weather I didn't notice for about 4 days! I will check all of this when its replaced on Tuesday.

I had a similar issue when I had a BMW convertible screen changed. There was a definite magnified ripple in the screen a few inches up from the dash.

The first screen was branded Autoglass, they changed it with another one after I complained, then they installed a pilkington and finally they installed the OEM BMW glass. I got them to change the screen 4 times before the ripple was no more. Each one had to be smashed out and had auto lights and rain sensors.

The installers bragged that their own make and even the Pilkington (or San Gobain etc) were the same as OEM screens except without the branding, but from my experience the OEM one was far superior. Must have cost them a fortune!

Most firms will install the OEM glass on request. Usually for no extra charge on the newer cars, and possibly a price difference charge on the older cars. Always double check the OEM price from dealers and online to challenge them if they make up inflated differences to bag a profit.

Or you could just complain about the quality and have them replace it 4 times until they sign off on the OEM.

Next time I need a windscreen replaced I will warn the glass company that if it is not perfect I will require it to be repaced, again, and again, and again etc.  Tom

Finally I had the screen replaced yesterday with a Pilkington screen. This one looks OK but i'm still getting a definite 'wave effect' when I use the heated screen - now i'm begining to wonder whether the original one did the same and i just didn't notice.

The fitters have suggested that maybe there is a fault with the FF and too much power is being put through the heating elements. But they have also said they will replace it again with an LR branded screen if i'm not happy! This must cost them a fortune.

It turns out that the first replacement had a ridge in it near the top causing distortion and actually making the screen to small for the car.......

You may as well go for the LR replacement and see what the effect is.

Did they replace the roof rail strips ? Discovery 4 HSE

if you focus on the screen you will see 'wavy lines' to a certain extent but when you look through it to the road etc you wont notice them..i've read that spectacle wearers sometimes have issues because of the difference in polarisation.. ... - .- -.
