Check Brake Pads

Hi all,

My FFRR has just thrown up the "Check Brake Pads" warning. Since I have limited mech experience I was looking for advice as there is no speific wiki which covers this subject on the 4.4V8. I have searched the threads and there is a good one going throught the replacemetn of pads on a TDv8 so I was wondering is there any substanial difference in the process and are the parts the same?

I have asked a couple of local indies to quote so I'll have an idea if it is worth getting it done professionally.

What should I look for to decide if the discs need changing?
Is there a simple way of determining which has triggered the alarm, front or rear?

Thanks for any help.

all wheels off and check the pad thickness, discs should be a certain thickness [specs in rave ?] and have no dis-concerning ridges or grooves..easy enough to do but if you're not sure then get a mechanic to do it..

as for prices, Ducky Dan will quote if you post your relevant info in his section or you could get a quote from Advanced Factors , who are also site sponsors... ... - .- -.

the alarm will have been triggered by the pad wear sensor on either the front or rear pads,

Checking the thickness is easy with the wheels off as the calipers usually have a gap in the side so you can physically look at them. less than 1.5mm is an mot fail and would have triggered the warning. good idea to change them if they look less than 3mm or so as you have the wheel off anyway.

assuming you are looking at a 4.4 petrol V8 then the calipers and pads are different to a tdv8 bu no harder to work on. There are basically 2 bolts which hold the caliper on. have a look at the workshop Joe90 found or at rave and there is a good guide how to remove the callipers etc none of it is hard, though the rear disc are a bit more involved as you have to adjust the handbrake to remove the disc as it acts on the centre part of the disc like a drum brake.

fronts are a doddle though. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
