Most customers don't want discretion nowadays, here or elsewhere - recent LR design is testimony. Twinkly lights, shiny grilles, oversized wheels, black windows, white leather etc.

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Orkney Grey

I have to say that the late model Grigio Alloy Pearl Tuscan IIS I had was supremely comfortable, had that rich hide aroma, went like nothing I've ever had or been in, sounded like WWIII on the over-run, never went wrong or let me down once, would get up to 62mph in 1st gear and theoretically over the ton in 2nd but I never went that fast......honest.

- but, having a back issue, it was an absolute bitch to get out of once I was in
- and it was a tad too loud - bit of a drone between 70 - 85 which was annoying
- and it had a fearful whine from the passenger side (oh yes, that was the missus, sorry)

But it was THE most beautiful car on the road and I would not have missed having it for anything

But it's the very difference between the two, different ends of the same spectrum, that make them comparable - for me, both are without peer for what they do and how they do it. 2012 FFRR Westminster Orkney / Ivory and absolutely no pimp-glass!

Sunday Times today reviewing latest Mercedes S class....

Blah, Blah, Blah

Last paragraphs , context was basically .... "good, advanced technology, yet bit dull, many buyers would like to turn up in a Range Rover...." Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

XJR the aluminium bodied one power and luxury, like a FFRR but without the off road capability.
I had a XJ6 but would have loved one, got the rangie now so won't be changing

Checked out a Mercedes SL500 a few months ago (R230 version) with all the options. Looked great. Probably a bit faster, although not in a meaningful way on road. Ride, interior trim, comfort, etc. a huge step DOWN from the FFRR.

United Kingdom 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Zambezi Silver

The Audi A8, bit bland externally but the interior is stunning and quality arguably better than RR. Also a big fan of the new Jag XJ in all of it's various guises.

I don't think there's another vehicle that does quite so much quite so well as the full fat RR, it's iconic, luxurious, good off road, good on road and has a prestigious image that many have been trying to achieve for years. I think it's one of those cars that although many are better than it in specific areas it strikes a balance that seems to leave all other luxury 4x4's and saloons for that matter baffled as to what the secret is..... I bet BMW are really kicking themselves for selling off the brand after they put so much investment in.... Particularly when the L322 seemed to hit amazing popularity after the introduction of the TDV8 engines Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White
Gone: Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue, Zambezi Silver, Charcoal Oxford Leather
Also: Mk1 Audi TT 1.8T Quattro, Brilliant Black
