Well sort of.

Got the unit last week and fitted it this weekend. Not much to do apart from adapt the Head unit carrier (as the new unit is a bit deeper) and run the cabling down to the back of the car.

It turns out that it doesn't have the computer functions as stated (ie mpg, mileage etc) and also that the loom basically diverts the speaker wires to the new head unit and back to the speaker wires going to the dsp. There is also a live and earth to attach. I think it sends a live signal to the dsp to fire up and just feeds the sound input from the new HU to the dsp to boost it.

* The unit itself is ok but a bit slow to respond (maybe because it runs on windows ce..?).
* The nav is ok but does not support postcode
* DVD is good
* Phone is good
* Bluetooth streaming is good

For now, I have wired to the old HU into the glove box (it just fits) so I can retain all the computer stuff and Aux Heating for when I need it.

Not convinced I'll keep it though. Essentially I could achieve the same by wiring inline to the speaker input to the dsp with any head unit and I could put a much better Kenwood unit in there for less.

I'll grab some photos as soon as I can to show you what it's like.

TBH - 6 out of 10 for me now (having spent 5 hours ripping the car apart for the install and reassembly..... Big Cry Ash

Update - Surprising how easy things are when you know how it all comes apart...

Took me 45 minutes to rip the new HU out and put the old one back in. I've decided to send it back as it's not what I wanted to achieve.

No postcode search, no computer functionality and average sounds made up my mind. It's all to be boxed up and sent back so I suspect the argument will begin as to a refund but they have given me an RMA number so know it's coming.

Shout now if anyone wants it before I send it back just in case anyone has a broken HU or other stuff not working. TBH It's ok but not special.

I plan to ship in the next few days so if you do want it - let me know. It cost £410 plus I had to pay £33.10 import duty Sad

Onwards with my search for a really good replacement..! Ash

hmm If you want a partial install (which I might try) you could use the existing HU and use Intravee II to connect the iPad (I think) just like you do iPhone.

I need a 90 degree iPhone connector for neatness and sit the iPad in front of the original HU (or move the HU to the glove box again and mount the iPad in the dash.

Leave the HU switched to Intravee input and it should always pick that up when you turn the car on and you can still use the steering wheel controls. Movies and nav etc "Should" still be output via the car speakers but that needs to be confirmed. I might just try this tonight.

SIMPLES...! Ash

This is the exact option I have just been discussing with my friend, I can't see why this wouldnt work. I'm going to look if the company could just create the housing for the iPad to go in front of the OE screen. That way when you want to use the iPad you can, but if you forget it, you still have access to the original system.

Hopefully that wont be anywhere near £2.5k Thumbs Up Bushy

Jeez! Thats a bit pricey!

Saw this on another site.. the guy fitted a Sony bluetooth headunit that he fitted in his glovebox. The HU can be controlled by the iPad that he fitted in his dash so never needing to touch the HU!

Have a look.. he claims it cost him £450 - and the biggest expense was the HU and wiring.. maybe this will be better for you?

Hi Ash,
Sorry, I didn't see this thread till today (was on vacation at the beginning of June). I've posted on this topic before:

IMO, the unit you tried can be ok for a RR that has no nav (MID radio): it is really plug n play as the big connector is up front in this case and it provides more functions. And the MID fits in the glovebox much more easily than a full nav screen so you can retain the regular functions.

I personally do not like the looks of any present aftermarket options in the L322 - these included as they look a bit cheap IMO - but def none of the Pioneer/Sony/etcetc or double DIN units available. You lose too much:
- Steering wheel controls (yes some systems do work a little - but not all functions)
- on board computer functions (mpg etc)
- seamless integration with all other systems and a factory look.

IMO, alternatives for the 02-04 RR are either a carPC like Joe or Mattstevenson (when he finishes) or/and an upgraded standard system with:
- nav upgrade MKIV + custom firmware
- Intravee
- BMW ULF bluetooth
- BMW eject box in the console for charging/better phone reception
- either OEM or aftermarket dvbt (but only if the aftermarket tv is controlled via oem switchgear - no remotes floating in the car)

All just my opinions and everyone should do whatever wiggles the willy. I have all of the above and a carPC :-p
