I like the 944. Nice colour, wheels and that classic Porsche dash. Thumbs Up

I think you're right about the residuals.

Whereabouts in Camberley? What time tomorrow? Just curious... Mr. Green Si. <This is my name.

Regarding the ex-liquidation sale, need to be completely certain that the vehicle is not stil entangle din teh winding up proceedings, and that the receiver / liquidator has released the car for sale, presumably to the seller... Whistle Graham

Not sure yet Si - said I'd call him tomorrow at some point and figure out a time to pop over. Why - fancy coming for a gander?

I don't think the Jag's are "soooo much nicer" I think they "sooo completely different"!

Jag is a GT car, quick, comfortable, V8, modern.

The 944 feels a generation older but is a proper driver's car, involving, agile, sharp.

Both would give me pleasure in totally different ways. But this is a 2nd car, something to blat about in at the weekends when I don't need to take the dog. So there's something really appealing about an old Porsche for that brief.

Having said that, to my eye the XK coupes are beautiful, and they do go like stink.

Again, either would make me smile, but for different reasons. Cool Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

I agree with you jfb, the Jags are very beautiful cars which (to my eye) the Porches are just not.

The 924/944/968 are the least nice looking Porches in my opinion. I do like the 928 although I don't think it's beautiful, I just like the looks. It's interesting that Porsche only makes "OK looking" cars (IMHO) and never stunners.

As for driving and reliability they are brilliant (not perfect but helluva lot better than JLR products).

You're right, each car has a different appeal and pushes different buttons. They should be bought side by side and not one replacing the other Smile Just double your budget and go for it Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

If you go the XKR route, as indeed with your S/C, you'll have to budget for a supercharger pulley upgrade at your Jaguar specialist. Who do you use, by the way?

So that's £500-1,000, depending on how serious you get.

The 944 won't need such changes.

You may wish to invest in a good quality Dinitrol treatment on either to prevent rust and enhance your investment.

Drop me a PM when and where. I'm taking Clare out for lunch at midday and may be available afterwards if time allows. Si. <This is my name.

I didn't go in the end Si - work got in the way (last day of the quarter and all that).

May go tomorrow instead - although I hear about the Jag's timing chains and tensioners tomorrow morning - if they've been done, I'm putting a deposit on it.

I won't be tinkering with the pulley (at least not initially) as the Jag needs a little TLC to be as I want it anyway (it's a cheap car, so I'm not expecting perfection - plus I want a few things to do). It needs a service, the leather needs conditioning and recolouring ideally, I want to put a Powerflow or Long Life exhaust on it, I'm going to upgrade the stereo to one with BT, iPod and DAB - plus I'm going to be having the wood trim turned into piano black (including the steering wheel wood) as I'm not 50 and wood is for boats and Bentleys, not sports cars. (Let's see who that upsets)! Whistle

Using these guys for that - http://www.garnishdip.co.uk/ - it's a pretty cool process - not like the cheap vinyl wrapping you sometimes see. This involves floating a micro thin inky film in water and 'dipping' the parts - then they get 6 coats of protective lacquer and varnish etc. Gives a totally factory finish. Not cheap mind.

So initially my money will be going on buying the car, servicing it, then getting it into the condition I want it before I think about performance mods.

I use these guys in Ashtead for servicing and maintenance - http://www.moonwhizz.co.uk/

Stupid name, great garage - I deal with a chap called Adam who's always very helpful and honest. They're also happy for me to provide my own parts (via Dan @ Duckworth's normally) as I can often beat their prices for OEM bits and then they just charge me for the labour to fit them. I get the Range serviced at Land Rover, so the stamp is in the book, then any recommended works done by Moonwhizz.

On my last RR service Land Rover Guildford presented me with a list of stuff that needed "immediate attention" totaling £2,200. I sourced all the OEM parts myself via Dan and got everything sorted for around £900 in the end. Thumbs Up Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

TOLD you the Dubai guy was a chancer! Clearly tried to mark it up and sell it on before actually buying the thing.

Back on with the original garage at the original price!

Having second thoughts about it? You'll probably be able to get it for a better price as a quick sale. Si. <This is my name.

The guy from Dubai never actually completed the transaction by the looks of things.

Looks like he overestimated its value and thought he could sell it on for a quick profit without ever actually touching it.

Guess he was wrong!

Having driven that car Si, I won't be buying it. Overall the condition is lovely and the history is all good, but there was a slight oil leak that would need further investigation and I wouldn't buy the Tiptronic having driven both versions now - the manual is like a totally different car. Either the slush box totally ruins the car or that particular one is really sluggish. The manual I drove felt like a rocket by comparison!

In other news...I'm getting very close to actually BUYING something now! Either a black 968 manual or a blue XKR.

Am seeing the XKR tomorrow and if it's as described (not a rust bucket like the last one I looked at!) and the dealer can produce the evidence that it's had new chains and tensioners that he says it has - I'll put a deposit on it tomorrow.

If it's no good, then I'll be putting a deposit on a very clean 968. Deal is all agreed in principal. The only "slight" ball ache is that the car is in Dundee! Shocked

Due to going off on holiday on Friday 12th for 2 weeks, the only date I can make it work is Monday 8th.

It's pretty straightforward. All I have to do is leave a meeting at 3pm in Oxford Circus, get the tube to Victoria, then hop on the Gatwick Express to catch the 16:50 flight up to Edinburgh. Then it's a taxi from Edinburgh airport to Haymarket train station where I get the train to Dundee. Buy the car (which hopefully is as described Exclamation ), then turn around and do a 4 hour night drive to about half way home (probably stop in a Travelodge around Warrington at about midnight) and then complete the final leg of the trip on Tuesday morning with a blast from Warrington to home in Leatherhead!

One hell of a mission. But should be fun! Sounds like a bloody Top Gear challenge! Laughing Thumbs Up Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...
