A few years ago I was on an extended vacation (built up a lot of leave days due to working offshore for many months) and travelled in NZ and Oz (plus a week in Thailand) for 18 weeks in total. During that trip I was lucky enough to get onto the Undersea Explorer, a research/pleasure dive combination where the pleasure divers basically pay for the cost, allowing the researchers to to do some 48 weeks a year of research.

The great thing is, if you are working "permanently" offshore (I have always been office based) then you only work half the year and mostly on tax free salaries as well MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

While I was looking for dive trips, I got an email from my then partner that my annual bonus came in. Since my then employer had done very well that year, the bonus was quite substantial (they link their bonuses to the annual result for all personnel) so that made the choice between a 3 and 5 day liveaboard very easy Oh and did I say that it was paid leave as it was in fact Time in Lieu ?? And that you get a financial incentive for every day spent offshore (actually that is quite normal in the offshore industry)??

I enjoyed looking through those. I'd really like to visit Australia and NZ, but fitting it into a 2 week holiday is difficult/impossible.
