Mine does the same sometimes. My old Jag S-Type R and BMW 750i which have the same gearbox also did it so I think it's an idiosyncrasy of the ZF6HP transmission. 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

I had the same until the gearbox and engine software was updated in January for the first time since new, that has cured the problem so far. I am sure I was given a technical bulletin in about it at the time, I will have a look for it if anybody is interested. MY2007 S/C - Stornoway / Jet |

It is all over the net, the 2-1 downshift on the 6HP26. Very unfortunate design flaw that comes with age. Can probably be resolved by changing out the Mechatronic for a refurbished or new one but that is a bit expensive. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
