United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Alaska White
RR fuel problem

went out in the car friday sitting in car park with engine running then it just stalled and would not re start

it will turn over but will not fire


AA turned up sprayed some quick start down the air inlet fired staright up then stopped again


so had it taken home by AA

tried starting it later same thing will turn over but will not fire Big Cry Big Cry

any ideas AA guy thinks it the fuel pump

Sounds just like the fuel pump. How full or empty is your tank? When mine is below 1/4 it is hot and miss getting it going. A new in tank pump is on my 'to do' list, but I keep it full in the mean time.

it was low then i filled it to about quarter tank and then it was fine then it stalled when i was sitting there engine running


its been sittng there all weekend


would it make any difference if i put some fuel in it

It can do as if the fuel level is below the hump in the tank, and the pump is weak, you can end up with no fuel on the pickup side. The pump uses a Venturi system to pull the fuel over the hump and this is the first sign of trouble. If you put half a tank in it and it still won't start, you may have a completely stuffed unit, but they usually give plenty of notice.

The other thing you could try is to cycle the ignition 10 or 12 times for a few seconds each (without cranking it). This can sometimes draw the fuel over enough to get you going and get you to a servo.

A mate is fiddling with a pick up system at the moment and is fitting a cheap generic Bosch pump that costs half of the BMW unit. Not the easiest fit, but it works fine and costs less than $100AU IIRC. I'll see if I can get the pump details if anyone is up for the same fiddling if they wanted to save a few bucks.

This is the way I'm going to repair mine, but I'm just waiting for him to finish his, and he'll pass on the pick up from his tank for me to modify. I'll then pass this onto the next guy, etc.

guys had a look and the fuel pump is shot

so i found this on ebay

right a little update

the guy came round on friday 30 mins later old pump out new 1 in and the car is running better then ever
