Very confused now

I still love the TDV8 Ive got, but as it gets towards 100K I can't keep putting the miles on it like I have done.

I absolutely loved the L405 I test dove, (And I absolutely love Range Rovers as a rule) so I could easily see myself in one, even if it were the 3.0TDV6 vogue model, but I am now at a crossroads....

1. Change mine for a late plate L322 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE or Autobiography
2. Order an L405 3.0 TDV6 Vogue and pay more than ever before on a car
3. Look at something different like a D4 as its cheaper

Trouble is each decision has pros and cons, like cost, the fact a Discovery 5 is coming and that I don't love them like I love the RR.

Granted, it's a nice problem to have but I need to do something this year. Shocked Discovery 4 HSE

Maybe this helps, maybe not.

I had a D4 as rental car for a week in South Africa. As for levels of comfort etc. IMHO they are so close to the FFRR that it doesn't justify the extra cost of a FFRR.

Looks and presence on the road of a FFRR however can not be matched by any car, especially the L322.

If you go to second hand cars, where the difference between a D4 and a late FFRR is less, then the FFRR becomes more desirable (to me at least) if I would be on a budget.

If you look at the gadgets on a D4 and FFRR, the more luxurious versions are getting PDC, but again the looks are much better on a L322 than a D4 IMHO.

So if money is tight and it can stretch to a low mileage D4, I would go that way. But if the premium for a L322 is available in the piggy bank and the premium is not that big anymore, I would still choose L322, they just look so much nicer.

As for the L405, I have never driven one but I believe it is as amazing as I heard from you and the other forum members on here. I don't doubt I feel the same once I get to drive one. I would wait for the L405s to become available second hand and preferably later models so most of the teething problems have been addressed.

So :

1. Lower budget, top of the range D4
2. Medium budget, late L322
3. BIG budget, L322 2012 latest possible
4. BIG BIG budget, L405 SC once the teething problems are sorted plus number 3 Rolling with laughter

Ok.

Disco : forget it, sold TDV8 Vogue a few months ago, bought a Disco on the spot at the dealer... kept if for: 2400 Km... bought a low(sih) mileage TDV8 Vogue. Also the D4 will be facelift soon for September delivery.

L405 : marvellous car, but not a "proper" Rangie as we know them and love them.
Also they are a lot of money for a car that just came out and is not yet proven faultfree.
Dealers do struggle with them all coming back for inspection because of suspension silent blocs noise and feel. Problem is LR hasn't told them how to fix it yet!

4.4 L322 : best of them all, good looking, timeless shape, go for alow mileage autobiography if you find a nice one, and you will not loose 25 000 the first year of owning it like an L405.

Disco: great vehicles but always designed to fill the gap *below* the Range Rover.

L405: great vehicle but you are paying a premium to be the first.

FFRR: i'd go for the MY 11.5 L322. The last of a series is always the best as LR seem to have ironed all the kinks out and will, ultimately, be the most sought after. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

As above Adam, if it was my money I'd be getting a 4.4 l322 as while the l405 is great the extra price really doesn't justify it when your putting miles on it and the 3.0 in real life I can not see being that much cheaper to run long term plus the additional maintenance costs of one would put me off.

You know the l322 body well enough to know what too look for and my experience has shown LR really haven't upped their quality game much with the 405 or new ssrr Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

There's a few key words in your opening post, namely 'this year' and 'mileage'.

What mileage do you do annually?

And there's still 6 months left of this year. Maybe time for a few ex-demo L405's to appear at a better price? Plate change, end of quarter/ year deal for sales targets?

I love the L322, but the L405 looks and feels streets ahead and you'll always be aiming for one even with a 4.4 L322.

Long-term, it might be better to aim for a decent spec and engined L405.

Short term, you could go L322 for, say, 2 years and then get a better L405 after that. Si. <This is my name.

All excellent points and ones I have thought of already, but it's nice to know I am on the right track.

I know a D4 would be good, there's aspects to them I really like, such as the hidden +2 seats, the fact the floor goes flat when folding the seats, the fact it's a bit different for a change to the RR, it drives nicer than the L322 overall (handling) but they don't have the image, the street cred, the same feel of being special. No one takes a second look at a D4, people still look at the L322's. They can look and feel a little bit bland. A RR will always be special.

I do about 18-20k a year at the moment, that has decreased over the last few years as I work from home more, but who knows if it will go up.

I think the money side is the main factor. I've always followed my Dad's example and paid cash for cars. If I go for another L322 I'd be ploughing in a whole chunk of cash ontop of selling mine, whereas if I went for a new D4 or an L405 I'd be using LR Finance. The sale of mine would cover the deposit and that cash that I would have spent in one hit now sits in the bank, gradually depleted by monthly payments (I estimate about 26 months of payments)

So is it a smarter way to manage your money doing a finance scheme?

I know you pay the interest etc and you are always going to lose money, especially the 20% VAT on a new car, but even so, it gets you a new car, with hopefully no issues and a 3yr warranty and roadside assistance. That's nice peace of mind when you absolutely RELY on your car, when you have godforsaken early morning starts to an airport that's 120 miles away, or the return trip home late at night etc. You need a car that won't let you down and that you REALLY want to drive and is comfortable.

A 2nd hand car can mean you are inheriting someone else's problems too, and I'd only be going for something like a 59-11 plate car if I got another L322.

Why dont you keep your own. It hasnt let you down really since you have had it. I would be keeping it and saving my funds for other things safe in the knowledge if something does go wrong you can cover it. Wait a couple of years for the l405 to come down in price and any issues sorted. Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Purely because it's inevitable that as it gets older and more miles on it, more things will naturally come to the end of their lifespan, and will start costing me money but also the time and effort to get fixed. I can't afford to be immobile. Discovery 4 HSE

You could buy a warranty for it and go that route. Although if I lived in the UK I would be driving a 2011. I would go for the L322 2011 onwards with the biggest spec in the 4.4 TDV8 Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

My 10p's worth. Problem is the L322 is at least a twelve year old design and always will be. However good (or not) the 405 is up to date but unproven and we all know how Landrovers reliabilty is!!
The 405 will need three years to show up its design faults and be discretely put right.
If its a company car or you can afford to swop out when the warranty finishes go for a 405
Private buyer wait a cuple of years for a new one until the bugs are known.
Last of the L322's could be a good buy at the right price.
I cant afford anyway Sad Mine was a blue one! Smile
