My dad asked me to take a look at his tyres last night, they are Goodyear Wranglers on the stock 18" alloys. As you can see from the pictures he has these thin wires sticking out of the sidewalls, there were three of them in total, one really long as you can see.

I said he must have driven over something as 2 of them pulled out really easily, and how could the wire have made it's way that far out of the tyre?

Anyone got any ideas how or why this happened?

Take it to a good tire shop, just to be sure the tires are OK. It could be that he drove over some loose steel cable strands (cut offs at a work site ???) and they ended up in the tire, like nails. I doubt that they are from the tire carcass themselves, I would expect to see a lot more damage. But again, better be safe than sorry. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Agree with stan ... that is a disintegrating tyre ... happened to me when on Safari in Kenya and had no option but to carry on - eventually suffered a blow-out - Fortunately not at speed.

The tyre has probably received a hard sharp knock that has split the steel wires and centrifugal force now forcing them out. (knew that A level physics would come is handy some day!) African Bush Junkie ... in London!

The tyre wires are not like that and if they were coming apart you would be getting bumps on the tyre wall where they had come from.

I'd still check the tyre out as its only £10 to demount and remount it but i think like you he must have run over something or some bits of wire have fallen off a scrappy vehicle and got into the tyre as they rubber can get quite warm which would make it easier for it get in  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

From the photo, they are from the tyre and it needs changing - you can see the tyre is worn and aged on the shoulder. Not much tread left anyway.

I'd agree with Stan on this matter. I must admit that Good Year are one of the biggest tyre companies in the world but I wouldn't give their tyres house room. This is especially so since I bought my FFRR as their tyres when new look like the the kinda tyres I'd be taking off any of my previous cars, they seem to have so little tread depth! Is it only me thats noticed this? The tread depth in the middle is decent enough but it seems to tail off as you get to the edge of the tyre & it only takes a few miles for this to become evident.

I would have expected to see more damage to the tyre. It warrants immediate low low speed travel to the nearest tyre specialist and have it replaced if needed. I certainly wouldn't want to take a risk with a 2.5 tonnes car at speed.
