I plan to do this in the next few weeks, but what can anyone tell me about it?

I always take what the salesman says with a pinch of salt, his view was that the L405 with the 3.0 TDV6 engine is comparable to the L322 with the 4.4 TDV8 in terms of performance, thanks to the reduced weight etc etc.

Give me your views on real life, and, can it really achieve 37mpg? Discovery 4 HSE

i drove it and it is boring like the 4.4 - i prefer the 5.0 l SC

The TDV6 in the L405 responds just like the 4.4 TDV8 L322, only it feels like you drive much lower, thus it corners much better.

The SDV8 is much more enjoyable to drive, not because it has more grunt, but because it comes with the very effective cornering device called Dynamic Response.

The 5.0 is a real beast, if you can afford stopping at the pump every 300 miles... l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

I wonder what JE Egineering can do to the TDV6, it's a proven engine for them, bet they can push the BHP up towards 300. Discovery 4 HSE

7.4s 0-60mph combined with 38mpg is quite enticing though....

I drove both last December at the Gleneagles event and was really taken with the TDV6 but already having a L322 TDV8 would always feel as if I had downsized,,,silly but true

In the Dodge HEMI engines 4 of the 8 cylinders auto shut down most of the time as they are just not required for the power being demanded. You do not even notice. In truth the TDV6 makes more sense but we all love our V8's

I think the TDV6 is plenty enough....great car. I've got the SDV8 because I've ordered it back in September. (could not try the TDV6 then...)
Having said that and driving the SDV8 I pobably wouldn't want to have the TDV6 now. The V8 is really fun to drive

Mine is the l405 v6 - 660 miles only on the clock so still a bit tight. Today drove on A4 for 5 miles then M4 for 25 then through central London for 10 miles of so - 7:00 in the morning so light traffic but still stop start. Motorway was adaptive cruise set at 80. Overall mpg 35.5 - quite pleased with that.

My previous discovery 3 would have been 28 mpg if driven the same way but would not have been as quick on acceleration or as quite or as comfortable. At 80 in the l405 pretty much the only thing I hear is the air con! Geoff

Very interesting subject.
I test drove both, I was set on the TDV6.
Initially drove the SDV8 in November: silk smooth, plenty of power and lovely noise. Didn't need to use much throttle to make good progress.2 months later, I drove the TDV6. Smooth but slower pace, thought engine was more present and a touch clattery when pressing on. Issue was you needed to use more throttle to make good progress.
I currently drive an E63 so the transition was more difficult in the V6.
Both are great cras and the price gap is meaningful. However a TDV6 AB is also £87k, lot of money for that engine.
For the 2014 MY, the TDV6 also gets smaller brake than the SDV8 and as mentioned the V8 also has active response and RSC.
I would expect mpg to be similar in both, TDV6 better/lighter by 200kg but needs to be worked harder, depending on your driving style.
Interestingly Land Rover residual value is the same after 3 yrs despite the initial price difference.

Read a fairly extreme view on another board, to the point of selling the TDV6 and ordering a SDV8.
I am still on the fence but I am leaning towards the V8.

I have just driven both and I currently own a MY11.5 TDV8 4.4L. If you are coming from the 4.4TDV8 you will want the new SDV8 is my opinion, without any doubt. It sounds almost Jag XFR ish. The 3.0L is a great engine but not if you are coming from the 4.4TDV8.

The difference is in outright acceleration, mid-range pull and the noise. A great engine and car if you aren't currently in the last 4.4L. You would always miss that mid-range grunt is MHO if choosing the 3.0L. 2010 5.0 Supercharged AB Stornoway Grey/Ivory
