It's not coughing great plumes of black smoke... so why not?

Lads,

Ok so I've paid the premium in fuel for my petrol RR, but I have downward pointing exhausts tips like a diesel. This is a problem I must rectify.

I'd like to put some supercharged style exhausts ends on my car (not quad, or twin, or aftermarket in any way - totally identical to the little stubby exhausts the S/C wears under its rear bumper).

Can anyone recommend a custom exhaust place in London (favouring the west) who could do a job like this?

I'm with you all the way on that 1. They look soooo much better with straight pipes. I did this to my RRS and did it really cheaply. I bought a genuine exhaust from a breakers and had the supercharged boxes welded to the existing exhaust.

I paid £50 for the S/C back boxes (plenty have been crashed and in breakers, and exhaust isn't something they'd normally sell hence the price).

Then £50 for my local exhaust fitter to weld them in. Then sold the old ones on ebay for £60!!

just WHY do diesel tail pipes point downwards?

Is it just because they throw our black soot and therefore it's nicer for other motorists if it hits the ground first? Discovery 4 HSE

You mean like trucks and tractors etc that point theirs up to the sky?or even the new BMW X5 that has straight pipes from the factory? Most people aren't bothered how their exhausts look but IMO the downpipes look crap. I'm sure i'm not on my own with that.... Shocked

I do take your point but if your Range Rover is pumping out plumes of smoke, then it has a problem that needs fixing. Mine never did. I'm sure the genuine S/C could function just fine with downpipes, but land rover themselves chose straight for asthetic purposes. If your car was pumping out smoke, would it really make that much difference if it was bounced off the floor first??

Also, if we were all THAT arsed about the environment, we wouldn't own Range Rovers at all Laughing Whistle

It's so they can be tucked up under the rear bumper isn't it?
Stops the exhaust being ripped off if you reverse into something off road.

Obvisouly, they don't think that's a problem with the SC as it won't be offroaded.
(Thrasher I expect is in a small minority)

Interestingly the 4.4 has the tucked up downward facing pipes too. Fox is correct about why.

I can however state that where they are on the SC is fine too - as :

1. They are strong!
2. You have 2, so if you block one with mud, it's fine Smile

(This is from someone who had his standard downward facing exahust on his Discovery 1 offroader replaced with a JE quad system hehe)

Oh and there's one other reason they are straight out the back - SOUND! Thumbs Up Land Rover Addict

I have some dim recollection about soot elements discharged out of the back of diesels requiring them to point the tips downwards. Modern diesels now have some sort of filter in the tail pipes to allow them to point straight out (like a Q7 3.0 TDi for example).
