Hi all,

Bit the bullet and ordered an engine to be delivered and installed next week £3k and a bit all in with a bit of warranty. After three opinions that the bores were glazed and shot no option really. It's a like for like so the ECU etc will be fine but is there anything I should look for or be aware of? I have also ordered a new water pump. New fuel pump and filter already fitted.

After 12 weeks off the road am getting a bit excited already..

If something can't be fixed with a hammer....... You have yourself an electrical fault!

I'm having it fittied by the garage that does all our family work then taking it to Stuart Armson in Leicester to check over the timing etc, no specialism really needed to swap them. Got the engine from Equicar, really helpful guy called Allan. When it's out I'll have the old one checked out and then sell the heads etc to recoup a little. My old engine was a sweet runner until the demise of compression. The bottom end to scarp yard I guess.

Do you have any idea why the original one failed? - IIRC you said about 80K miles which seems very low for this engine. Without wanting to be pessimistic, you obviously want to be sure that the root cause has been eradicated with the replacement engine!

The engine is not "New" but is new to the car. It's a replacement from a 2004 RR with 75ish k on the clock of the donor.

The consensus of opinion is that 6 years of gas has taken its toll and glazed the bores, a mates brother who works for pro drive confirmed this with an endoscope check of four cylinders at the bottom of the stroke. He says it could have been an earlier overheating issue too that is also an M62 killer by all accounts. In saying that, I'll be putting the gas back on after the warranty of the replacement expires.

As I've said before, I thank everyone for their observations and help and I'm sure I'll continue with other issues along the way, but this guy confirmed that the engine couldn't hold compression when the oil burnt of the cylinder walls which is why it cut out after a few mins even though she sounded sweet when running and he came with a car full of kit. Sorry, but he did this as a favour and doesn't do foreigners.. Owning a Range Rover is the land based version of a boat...a hole in the road in which to throw regular bundles of money!
