Just picked up 2003 4.4 for £6900. 54k on the clock and a lot of irritating things needing sorted (most done now) from brakes, rear wiper, replacement hi-light, new tyres, front diff failure & fix, new battery. Add in optional buys because I tinker : full set of calipers for powder coating, chromed grille etc and think its already swallowed a decent chunk of cash.

Brembos on way which will mean swap out of 18" alloys and of course always the potential for gearbox meltdown with TFSP errors tho potentiometer is likely culprit. I am going to have spare gearbox in garage just in case (will always get £ back on it alone).

All in all still a happy bunny as even if it costs me £10k over next 2-3 yrs it is likely to be replaced 80-90k mileage and have had all niggles sorted. I suspect I will still get £3-4k then despite tax. I also get to drive around in something I love driving v's some anaemic soulless but "reliable" dull-mobile.

Not as good as last FFRR tho. P38 for £2.5k incl fitted LPG and lasted 3 yrs before gearbox failed.

The thing is they are a bit like big yank tanks in that they will spend a lot of time cruising at speeds well over 40mpg a lot of the time on highways and biways.

My view is this:

1. I want a car I love to drive, every single day
2. As I cover about 25K/year I want something stuffed with toys and creature comforts to make those miles more fun
3. I also need a car to be safe, and a big RR I feel is safer to be in than a 1.0 Eurobox
4. I don't have many vices, but I do love Range Rovers, so it's my main indulgence
5. I never expect to make money on a car, it's a cost, a big one
6. Everyone 'knows' me by my car, it's part of who I am (Not in a snob way, but the fact I'm so passionate about Land Rovers and Range Rovers in particular), so I think I'd look odd in anything else!

^ I agree with all of the above. I posted this as a guide to whoever was interested in the costs of buying and running a 2nd hand FFRR. I loved the car. I look forward to my next. It was never a financial decision to replace it, more one of function.
If it was financial then I would have kept it as it has cost me thousands over the money I got for it to buy a Porsche and a Honda crv. FFRR is still, in my book, the best vehicle on the road today. Previously..

Agreed Flashman and BTW we sold our Porsche 911 6 weeks ago as we just didnt use it and TBH didnt enjoy it anywhere as near as much as I enjoy driving around in the RR. Horses for courses or is that for burgers ???

I'm sure I've been hit hard by depreciation - but hey ho. My wife can't understand it when I am outside bodging and messing with an old car that sometimes won't start - she says one grumpy and unpredictable thing in the house is enough

Thirty years of company cars behind me, all reliable, under warranty, fully financed by someone else - some of them really great cars but I don't miss 'em but I think my RR I would miss if I sold it. I always wanted a Range Rover and none of those schemes allowed 4x4 vehicles and I couldn't be opting out.

Also I think for the latter cars I paid tax of about £9k/annum, but not sure as I never worked it out, I bet someone can - 70k car and a higher rate taxpayer.  Geoff
