New engine needed

Hi,

I have had final confirmation that my 4.4 L322 needs a new donkey. Fuel is good, no codes or software issues but just cuts out when it burns off the oil from the cylinders.
Is there anyone who knows where I can get a recondition unit or if mine can actually be rebuilt as I have heard that the M62 can't be rebuilt from the bottom up. Is that correct?

Cheers Big Cry

Very sorry to hear that ! There are a few other members on here that have engine issues with that particular engine. They are looking for replacement as well, although I tried to make a case for refurb, depending on the cost of course.

Have a look using search, it may help you finding a good solution that works for you. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Rugby, did you do a compression test without putting oil in the cylinders too for comparison? was it using water, oil, engine making odd noises when it was running? '04 td6 se

surely it would be near impossinle to build an engine from the top down only?. think you have to be able to split it to get the crank in. if thats the case you could do the pistons from there. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

I'd go with crookedm - see what you can find at a breakers. I think it's quite likely that there would be BMWs with fine engines but other issues and not economically worth fixing. Good luck.

Also worth checking the camshaft timing. i think these engines can have probs with the timing chains or tensioners or something. '04 td6 se

smoke and oil burning can be a result from a bad crankcase ventilation. blocked pvc valve or worn diaphragm in the back of the engine. normally the m62 is a very solid engine. check this parts.

I saw you've had a compression test, but have you had a leakdown test? This will tell you which side of the engine is worn - if the compression loss is past the rings/cylinder wall, or whether it is on the inlet or exhaust valve(s).

Have to admit I'm surprised that you can get it to run with some oil in the cylinders but it cuts out altogether once burnt. I'd expect it to be lumpy or rough running, but not refuse to run at all with poor compression. Especially if it seemed ok before it first failed on you.

The M62 does not have liners in the block; instead it has an alusil coating which hardens the casting. So if that is gone then it's new block time, but until a leakdown test has been performed and the internals of the engine examined, you won't know whether that is the case.

T&C say a new engine resulting from bore wash as do a couple of others too. Glazed walls i would guess, so I have decided to drop another engine in and am looking for one now. I'm going down the LR straight swap route rather than a BMW. Will I need to change the ECU or will mine be ok as I assume the electronics will just slot in too?
I've looked into rebuilding and remanufactured units but can't seem source either the bits or a remanf'ed one.
I can't be off the road any longer as this is my daily car and not a project so I just have to move on a take the pain...

A massive thank you for everyone's help and comments, you have all helped and will hopefully continue too as I'm sure I'll need it.

Cheers all,

Chris
