Rusty Rangie

Hello all

I have got a 2011 Vogue and have recently found some rusty bits. The paint has gone lumpy showing rust on the top of the rear door (just above window) and the rubber around the rear window has gone lumpy at the top and n bottom on both sides (where the glass is held in).

I'm taking it in tomorrow for a warranty inspection, but has this been suffered by other owners?

You could try complaining. I did, and got nowhere. What a load of crap. Corrosion on a nearly new modern car. Graham

the rubber trim strips at the bottm of the window are a relatively cheap fix, most i've seen are the same.

The rubber window trims are aluminium inside - its not rust but some form or alloy corrosion. Very common on older cars so just buy new ones.

Sounds like galvanic corrosion where two dissimilar metals (of which one is less noble) start to react basically create a battery when an electrolyte is added (water, preferably slightly salty). The less noble metal will then start to corrode as it loses electrons.

You see it on boats where they attached zinc/aluminium anodes to protect the steel hull from corrosion (also offshore platforms and pipelines, the business I am in).

If the coating on the metal is intact, the electrolyte can't get to the metals and things are fine but over time the coating wears, gets damaged (could also be at initial installation or just bad paint job) and the corrosion starts.

Bottomline is, get it cleaned up, coated properly (repainted and then some waxoil) and put the rubber strips back in. You should be fine for years then. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

When I bought mine I noticed a couple of rust bubbles under the paint. I thought they had a 6 years corrosion warranty so went to my local dealer who took some pictures. Came back with the response that because there wasn't a hole in it it was a non starter. I pointed out that in the warranty book it didn't state this and it repeatedly mentions corrosion warranty not perforation warranty ie if it has corrosion before the expiry of the warranty it was covered...apparently NOT!!

Mine had a full corrosion inspection stamp list too. One thing to mention is that even if you have your car serviced elsewhere than a main dealer go and get the corrosion check done at the main dealer otherwise he was saying you ain't got a leg to stand on !!!

I agree with others that this is really poor. Talking to my local approved body shop this is pretty common for them to show signs of corrosion both on the aluminium parts bonnet etc. and the galvanised steel parts too. He mentioned to check the tailgate for corrosion on the lower edge and to ensure the drain holes are clear as the water can build up in the top tailgate and rot it from inside out ....and you don't even want to know the price of a replacement!! ...Always time for a brew !!
