2005 Range Rover TD6 High Mileage

HI all,

Now I have reluctantly decided to sell my excellent TDV8 I am looking for a nice 2005 TD6 preferably in Tonga Green. I have found an immaculate example that is cheap but has 156,000 miles on the clock. Bearing in mind its "Diesel" status could this still be a good car? Question Question Question

Gaz

Without wanting to be rude...

You'll save a bit on the trade, but buy a high milage car that is more likely to have a fault and cost you money.
If the TDV8 has been well looked after by you the end cost may not be that different...

I can't see the point really after the thread explaining your finances. You could well be saving money and buying a bigger future liability.

Appreciate your opinion but selling for £36250 and buying for £13k is a £23250 difference. Thats quite a lot of cash and a rarely keep a car longer than 12months Very Happy .

At 156K everything that can fall off has already fallen off and been replaced one would hope.

I would think the engine will be fine, and the gearbox on these are bullet proof - HOWEVER the bearbox does require an oil change every 50,000 miles and given the sealed for life unit I doubt it will have ever been changed unless owned by an enthusiast. Still, gearboxes are cheap these days (under £1500) but bare in mind the TD6 uses a GM box rather than the ZF box.

Obviously you know what you're looking at as this isn't your first one...

That is quite cheap, even for the mileage. I'll be shocked if you lose anything at all over 12 months owning a 2005 at that price.

It's well worth an extended inspection at that mileage though. We have a few of these at work with close to 200k on them. I'm not aware of any engine failures but gearboxes have given out. 'Sealed for life' is a dumb idea so the advice to get the gearbox checked is definately sound.

I see what you mean about protecting your cash. Another year on your TDV8 will probably be the biggest drop in value. The loss would probably almost pay for most of your TD6.

Good luck whatever you decide......... Thumbs Up

I use (and like) an independent north of Aylesbury - who are going to change my gearbox oil & filter on the next service - I can pm details if that isn't too far for you. They did a very thorough inspection for me on my TD6.

The gearbox is bulletproof Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Mine has had 5 replacements in 100,000 miles.

The GM box is very well know to be a weak point.

Hopefully the last one fitted was reconditioned by an independent expert, so it may last longer!

I have also heard of problems with gearboxes, but these could just be isolated incidents as I have also heard of no problems over extended miles, I think Adam (RRUK) put something of the order of 90k odd miles on his TD6 without any issues other than usual wear and tear...

Also seen a VERY cheap low mileage TDV8 HSE which looks in the pictures identical to Vogue including NAV and all the same buttons etc. Whats the difference?

the differences "used" to be cheaper seats, no leather dash top, think cheaper sat nav, stereo, cheap smaller wheels etc etc.

The LR web site might give more uptodate info.
