Sudden Dramatic Water Loss - 4.2 SC

As per the title really.

Car has not used a drop of coolant in 12 months, until last night.

Got a check coolant level warning bong last night, pulled into a filling station and expansion tank empty, and steady drip of coolant on the ground.

Topped it up and limped on, eyes glued on the temperature gauge, which stayed nicely normal.

Checked again at home, expansion tank empty. Refilled.

Limped it round to a mates with a ramp, no more than 20 minutes away. Expansion tank empty again.

Going to get under it later today for a good look around, but just wondering if the symptoms are familiar to anyone here. Got to be a hose, rad or pump for the sheer volume of the leak, surely? Checking on Microcat there seem to be 2 water radiators, 2 water pumps, etc etc Big Cry

Hi mate, stop driving the car immediately. It could be the same issue that I am having, the dreaded leaking oil cooler. I hope not but have a good look !!!

Have read your thread.

Symptoms different, no sludge, collant visible on the chassis rais and steam from somewhere on the nearside near the rads.

Hope not to be prooved wrong, but think this is a "simple" failure in the water system.

Hope you are right although that is not a cheap one either. The radiator is 345 Euro ex VAT at the Dutch dealer (I haven't ordered it as I think its fine).

Probably go to an indy close by and let him pressurize the system or just run the engine (with coolant topped up) and if you have coolant leakage somewhere. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

It'll be the radiator, I had to change mine - what year is yours ? There was a TSB for the radiator on 06 MY cars - they modified the radiator to rectify the known issue. It leaks on the rhs just where the core meets the side tank - if you grab a torch you should be able to see it. A new rad from Dan was about £200 from memory Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

Good news:
It's not the transmission cooler or the rad. It's just a hose.

Bad news:
The hose seems to run back from the thermostat housing, under the supercharger, through the valley. The 'charger will have to come off, and that's out of my comfort zone, so it's now with my local Indy.

Thanks for the thoughts, will keep you advised.

Well that is much better than the trans cooler mate, not great but at least this should be relatively easy to do. New hose and clamps won't cost the world and hopefully the indy won't take too much time. You may need new gaskets as well but still not the world. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

this really isnt such a bad job to do!
the cololant pipes come as a set that run to the throttlebody and back under the S/charger.
The hardest part is getting to the 13mm bolt under the charger!
Job took me no longer than a few hours start to finish.
if you have any questions i would be happy to help.

Glad to hear it is resolved. I am still waiting for my cars cooling system to be cleaned. They are still flushing all the oil and muck out after the transmission cooler failure.

Also two more flushes of the transmission oil before I want to start driving it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Where the hell were you 11 days ago?

Very Happy

I probably should have had a go, but lack of bottle saw me hand it over to a local indy with a good reputation.

Should be back today / tomorrow, but bracing myself for the bill.

After you have taken the engine cover and intake section off everything looks a little easier!
Just a large mechano set!

I did, it was a supercharger off job to route the hose, thankfully mine was covered by the LR waranty, otherwise it would have been expensive.

I believe LR modified the thermostat and hose from 2007 so the pipe can be removed without removing the supercharger.

Good luck and let us know what it cost to repair.
