Can anybody shed some light on this for me....

I have been doing a lot of long distance driving over the last couple of weeks and have noticed that the front seat heaters turn themselves off?!? I haven't notice the exact time period they stay on for but it seems to be about 10 mins after turning them on for the first time and then about 30 mins for subsequent cycles. It happens on both front seats and I can't find any reference to this in the handbook.

This doesn't happen on any other vehicle that I own, once turned on they stay on until you turn them off or turn the ignition off.

Is this normal? Does everybody elses seat heater operate in this way?

yes theyre definately on a timer. Think its a safety thing...

Maybe your butt gets used to the heat but mine stay on to the setting I put them on for as long as I want . 2008 MY Supercharged

When you say they turn off, do you mean the lights go off on the switch, or they just dont get hot anymore?

There is no timer, the temperature is regulated by a temperature sensor to 39 deg and 44 deg. If there is a fault you can check it by:

Fault Finding

In the self-test mode the switch indicates faults by displaying a flashing code.
The sequence to select test mode is :
1 Press the heating switch with the ignition off
2 With the switch depressed turn on the ignition switch to Position II
3 Release the switch, this activates the self-test mode
4 After 10 seconds the flashing code is displayed.

The flashing code indicates the following faults
1 Flash — Switch overtemperature (T > 9C)
2 Flashes — Short circuit and/or interruption in the sensor
3 Flashes — Short circuit and/or interruption in the heating elements.

With the switch set to test mode, maximum heating is selected and both lamps are lit. If a fault is identified the heating is switched off and, after 10 seconds, the left LED switches off , this LED generates the flashing code. If no fault is detected the LED remains unlit.

To return to the test mode the switch is pressed twice and the sequence starts again. To cancel the test mode the ignition switch is turned off. 

mine stay on all the time, though on RRS they turn off after 20ish minutes...

Same here - but the Disco3 seat heaters went off as described above too. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Yes the lights on the button turn off.

Dan I have tried your test procedure but I can't get it to work. I have a 06MY vehicle, is there a different way of accessing the test mode?
