Torque convertor problem

Hello all,

I have a problem with my 2004 td6 ff. I bought the car some time ago with a revised gearbox.

Last week i had a transmission failure message in the dash, the torque convertor had a massive slip at full throttle but gears changed well and no speed limit etc.

After clearing the fault, there was less slip but now it seems that the lockup from the torque converter isn't working. Also the torque convertor seems to slip more than before..

Somebody has some idea's?

thanks

It sounds like it needs replacing Big Cry

I did a stall test and the engine stalls at about 2400rpm's, so i think my TC is ok?

Unfortunately, failure of the torque converter lock-up clutch in the GM 5L40-E transmission is a very common problem with the TD6 L322.

This generally results in a large amount of fine metallic debris being deposited into the fluid so I would suggest that you drain the fluid to check (it looks like glitter).

Is this an expensive part? Much labour involved?

Is there anyway to adjust oil pressure?

I have the feeling that the car, after the small dashboard failure, is going smoother trough its gears but the lockup isn't working..

Do you feel a vibration at lock up?

Similar vibration as driving over a cattle grid

The lock-up clutch fails through low engagement pressure caused by spool/bore wear in the valve block/pump housing (which allows leakage). Replacing the torque converter would only be a temporary fix because the root cause hadn’t been addressed. You really need to check your fluid for metallic contamination because if the LUC has worn through its lining I’m afraid the rest of your transmission is about to go the same way as it’s effectively running in grinding paste.

Sonnax produce kits to fix the valve leakage.

Thanks for all replies!

I see i have a constant gearbox/ Transmission fault:

Canbus brake signal fault...

I can't clear this fault.

Has this something to do with my other gearbox related problem?

Thanks

If you carry on driving, you are just making the problem more and more expensive to fix.

I would advise to stop driving the vehicle and get the gearbox rebuilt, this means TC, valve block and clutch plates...plus get the oil cooler replaced. The TQ could fail totally and leave you stranded, but the worst case is damage to the gearbox casing, which means a whole new gearbox!

There are plenty of good Auto Box engineering companies who can do the job, just search the web.

Valve block has been replaced and problem seems to be solved. (torque converter was only 4000km's from new)

Thanks for info!
