Need to replace the front tyres currently have 255/50/20 yokohama adva st all round not sure wether to replace like for like or to get something different.
Rears still have plenty of life in them yet.
Any advise greatly appreciated. Gone

I'd always try to keep all 4 the same

Keep all 4 the same, IMHO. Not completely necessary but seems sensible. Unless you can get a really good deal on a full set.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As long as the tyres on each axle are the same you shouldn't notice any difference, even in extreme conditions unless you spend your days pushing tyres to the limit you won't know the difference. Still say all 4 the same. Different tyres have different compounds and you want all four wheel to be using same compound as compounds react differently in varying temperatures.

4 Wheel drive needs 4 wheel traction.

...on a formula one race car , yes probably but not on a heavy duty 4x4 like the fullfat.......

you also have to remember that not all fullfat owners have the funds to buy sets of four tyres in one go and most need to find the best for their budget..
22 years in the tyre trade taught me to recommend you should have the same make on the same axle with similar tread depths and similar tyres on the other axle, ie not big chunkys on one and smooth road on the other... ... - .- -.

Most important to keep the same all round if you can, equal grip all round is best.

Bit far Gaz to go from hamilton to Cumbria for a couple of tyres, used to use lloyds in Carlisle to look after previous ff and sport far better service than any local dealers.
Bought the current ff from parks in Ayr with a service pack in the deal used them once so far and service was great not the usual discs and pads routine I have had from BMW dealers in the same group. Gone
