Torque Converter - do I take it in?

The car has been making a faint noise like its going over a cattle grid when in 5th gear and less than 2000 rpm. Mostly at 30 mph and 50 mph. It stops at 56mph so looking on here I think it points to the TC.

I have booked the car in to have a replacement fitted tomorrow but I am wondering if I need to leave it a bit longer or even perhaps look at changing the gear box oil 1st as its not that noticeable at the moment. I know its there, but I maybe hear it a couple of times when I drive.

Any ideas? Should I take it in and part with £700ish tomorrow or leave it (could it wreck the gearbox if left?). Would an oil change maybe sort it.

One point is that the noise doesn't happen when the car is cold so I assume the oil is thicker. It only happens when its warm.

Are you really sure? You are going to be more than halfway to a new transmission when all is said and done.
If you do have a ne TC put in, then yes, by all means have the gearbox flushed. I'd save my money, though.

Are you sure it's speed specific?

I had this problem and turned out my engine had the wrong injectors fitted by the previous owner, however that was a TD6, not 4.4

Try manual mode and see what happens when you try to accelerate in the highest available gear

I had the same thing. Changed the TC before it took the gearbox out and all is good.

Was it the same as all the symptoms I have described? I am thinking £700 may be better than a whole new gearbox but then I do 5000 miles a year and plan to keep the car for a year max........argh decisions!

jus read something about the juddering on another site, apparently, and dont quote me on this its something to do with the lock up clutch LUC wearing out in the TC.

Could be misguided but a google of LUC judder L322 should give some answers. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That's correct, and why you need to get it done sooner rather than later. You don't want all the bits making their way into the gearbox.

It's a shame the LUC can't be replaced on its own. I think I will get it done. If the bloody battery lasted more than 2 days it would be a perfect car, and I am coming from performance cars.

Please do - it's been my (limited) experience that if you get it fix as soon as you notice the judder (before it's at cattle grid strength!) you'll probably save the gearbox and £1500 quid...

Picked it up this morning. Issue resolved. It was the Torque Converter.

The garage fixed it in 1 day. £744 inc vat. If I am allowed to say the company was called autobox in Longton Stoke on Trent. Very pleased with the price and speed of the fix.
