Dog lovers / animal lovers please read

Hi all

I've just popped over from the RRS Forum in the hope that there is some who deals in imports & exports, airlines, vets or boarding kennels.

Even if you just have some good advice that I can use. Please check out this posting

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic29857.html

I'm not a scammer, and I'm sure that Martin will confirm that I have never made any similar type posts

Thanks for your time.

Jim

Shocked Poor dog. I hope it works out for you both. Do you have a picture of your dog or of his breed? I am picturing a hyena when you say desert dog!! Previously..

Hi

There are photo's of him on the RRS Forum posting.

The best way to describe him is a larger version of a boarder collie

OK, so I've not done this myself but a pal of mine does take his dog to Florida every year. He uses these people.

Doing a quick google on some of the expressions they use in their site tags brings up a healthy amount of choice on this. Some even appear to do online quotes.

Best of luck.

Hi Jim
Its a complex issue and forgive me if you know all this already but basically you will be making use of the DEFRA regulations encompassing the Pet Travel Scheme. There is no way you can avoid a period of waiting before entering the UK its just the the Pet travel scheme allows the period of quarantine to be done before entering the country. So basically first thing is to decide whether you are coming from an EU country or not and if not then if it is a listed non EU country ie one which has good veterinary health care and low rabies risk or not. Now I believe Saudi will be a non listed so you start sadly in the worst possible position.
Having said that it is all very doeable and basically is always a variation on the following:
1. Dog microchipped with DEFRA recognised chip
2. Vaccinations against the usual plus rabies
3. Blood sample 30 days + post rabies vaccine to show good enough titre (sntibody level)
4. Period of waiting at least 3 months post blood test before animal allowed into UK and no quarantine.
5. Tapeworm treatments etc with DEFRA recognised parasiticides to stop nasty bugs getting in
6. Travel home any way desired.

The companies you can use can advise and help with all this though they do make a pretty packet in doing so.
You can easily organise it all yourself with a little thought and patience and avoid a big bill from these companies but bear in mind the transport on its own costs a lot. Not sure if military can help with these things.

Anyway let me know if you want specific contact details or phone numbers for those who can help.

And PS Well done for stepping in, some things are more important than cash.

T

Get me on tom@linksvet.co.uk if you like.
Cheers

Hi All

Some great advice, which is what I am short of out here at present!

Tom - Thanks for putting the DEFRA Regs into laymans terms for me. That really has been a great help. I know what you mean about some companies making a pretty packet! I had a company quote me for a transport crate and flight back to the UK. They came in at $5045USD........... Shocked

Rest assured Tom I will be picking your brains!

Jayboy - I have now placed my e mail addy on my original post on the RRS Forum so that people can make a small donation if they want.

A big thank you to everyone who is and has helped so far.

I have to travel to town tomorrow (to see if I still have a job??) and will pop in to see how Lucky is getting along. I'll update you all over the next couple of days.

Jim

Tom - have you or do you know of anyone who has used KLM to fly their pets back to the UK?

Have just been on their site and it appears that you can fly a dog, upto 75kgs, for 200 euro's?

Hi all

I just wanted to update you all on whats been happening over the last couple of days.

Firstly a very big thank you to gFunk (RRS Forum)

I turns out that his Mum lives in one of the expat compounds in Khobar. She sent out a call for help via e mail, and within 30 minutes I had 7 offers from people to "foster" Lucky until June, when I can bring him back to the UK!

I have also found that KLM will fly him as hold luggage back to the UK for 200 Euros.

So it looks as if a plan has come together!

Thank you to everyone who donated or gave advice. I won't forget your kindness, and you will all be invited to a party that I am holding next May (May 2014) more details will follow.

I'll keep you all up dated.

Jim
